Has anyone noticed at the check out counter, the cashier always asks if you have 1 drh??

It happens to me everytime !!

I think someone has posted this before. Worth searching for.

Anyway, I did a search and couldn't find it, so I will chip in with my 50 fils.

I do not mind being asked if I have one dirham... I do mind the tetching (tsking) that I get if I DON'T have 1 dirham.

"Maam/Sir you have one Dirham?" - even when I'm by myself, and I am no Maam.

"No, do you have 4?"

Maam ... har har

Interestingly it happened yesterday in Organic. She called me sir and then looked up and apologised. And called me maam.

She is sweet so it doesnt bother me. Although I dont really like to be called maam either. And I noticed this is very Filipinos.

What is another substitution for maam?

Madame and maam are not the same. I think they call you maam here and not madame.

Yes that's true. I myself couldn't stop me from addressing my superiors (or in their case, the customers) with a "sir" or "maam". It feels unrespectful and rude if I don't, even after they tell me to just call them by their first names. lol.
But not using them correctly is a different story.. maybe it became too mechanical for the cashiers

I'd rather give a dirham than take 4.

I've never been called "Maamsir" in my 2 decades here. You must look very womanly, so you confuse the clerk, and they just shoot for both titles.
