Puzzling incident in Dubai on a foggy Saturday morning Nov 18, 2007
Apparently a friend of mine was stranded on SZR at dawn on Saturday morning, with 2 bust-up tyres. In addition, he had been drinking the night before. I assume he hasnt got any identification as well since he temporary lost his wallet.

Police came and went. Nothing happened. What puzzled me were 1) why didnt the police help? 2) How did he get away with drink driving and without any identification on him?

Well, the police don't suspect every driver of being drunk. He or She would have had to have been clearly drunk enough to arouse the suspicion of the police.

IF you're stuck the police will ask if help is on the way. If it is, they will generally leave you to your own devices.

Anyway I am glad everything is fine for my friend.

p/s Just curious, if the police here "slightly" more lenient with lady drink driving - not dead drunk, just a couple of wino. Any ladies or lady friends with experience please share.

I would think that with 2 flat tyres the police would be unable to help as most drivers only carry one spare tyre.

If he had no id maybe he told the police he was George Bush or something and they left him alone!

out of curiousity how did he blow 2 tires? did he hit something? I think ian's right in that the police wouldn't automatically assume he was drunk if he wasn't showing any signs.

Some of my Indian "friends" had a handful of drinks, and while heading for their car, saw a drunk driver scratch their car as he drove away. So they called the cops, the cops smelt their breath and realised they had some drinks, and told them its okay, but also told them no to bother reporting the accident since the perp wasn't around anyway. And then they all went home.

Well, for one thing, taxis only stop for a select group of people.
