Project Managers in Dubai Oct 22, 2007
Hi - I've been searching the internet and came across this forum. The group seems to have a fun atmoshphere but also quite knowledgeable - therefore I am wondering if someone can assist with some questions I have.

I own a smaller consulting firm focussing on Project Managers and running IT projects. My focus in on Global Projects, but I would like to break into some local markets. I live in Prague so am working the EU market from there - as well as Singapore. I, like everyone I suppose, hear that there is much work in Dubai.

Are there companies that use consultants or is it just FTE's?
if yes - How does one get in touch with companies that require consultants?

I may be coming to Dubai in a week or so to meet a colleague that would introduce me to some of his contacts (he is from Turkey).

Thank you so much for your help.

in order to work and consult legally in dubai you need to be part of a registered company, or to own and run your business through one of the numerous freezones in the area.

use the time you have next week to the maximum. try to visit the media city and knowledge village free zones; visit the free zone offices and get copies of the procedures and charges for starting and running a business. if you are new to the region i would advise against jumping into a business partnership in the UAE unti you know the in's and out's of business in the region. The FZ is a much easier (although costly) way of avoiding many of the headaches that you could experience with doing business in Dubai.

Thank you very much for the great information. I will be sure to visit both of the places you recommend. From your experience, does it seem there are locals and/or expats living in Dubai that have PM experience? I am wondering if I will have to relocate consultants to the area, or if I will find local talent.

again - thank you for taking time to reply. It is very appreciated.

both, bear in mind that a full 80% of the people in the UAE (and Dubai) are expats!

to GENERALIZE, most of the work is done by expats, there are also a fair number of well educated "locals" (UAE nationals) in the 20 - 35 year age range. the labour policy in the UAE is that an expat is only employed if a "local" cannot be found to provide the required skills.

there are plenty of PM's around in almost every facet of industry - although predominantly in the contruction sector
