It depends on what quality of life you are looking for?

People survive in Dubai on lots less, but I think you would certainly struggle to get your own room - maybe you would need to share which I believe is quite common here.

What job are you going to be doing for this salary and where is your job located, this is important to think about home/commute?

It's not American Systems, is it? They have horrible working conditions.

7.5k will mean at most a 1-bedroom apartment in Sharjah (or a studio or a room in Karama) and an economy car. Not exactly the "good" life, but good enough money for a conservative bachelor, since I made that much at one point. If you live like this in India already, then you will do well in India itself.

are you sure you can get a studio or room in Karama, run a car and live on 7.5K - it doesn't seem much to me?

Well Done!

I know for a fact I couldn't. I spend more than that at Spinney's each week, and we eat out most days. What the hell do you eat?

Hehe, ok. Some tips:

Fact 1: If you want to save money, do NOT shop at Spinneys.
Fact 2: Eating out once in a while is fine, but learning to cook is cheaper (time not an excuse unless you are a labourer, and even they cook).
Fact 3: You have to reduce your preferences of eating only at restaurants in five-star hotels and on the SZR. Mingle with the Indians a little!
Fact 4: Doesn't mean you give up five-star hotels. I've been to all the fancy bars with friends to have my non-alcoholic pina coladas. The cost was a non-issue because I didn't make a habit out of it.
Fact 5: None of the above matters if you make more than 300k a year. If I made 300k a year, I'd probably splurge too. Unless I was saving up for a Ferrari.

1. Spinneys is the only place to shop, along with the organic food & cafe and marks and spencer! (I'm such an expat)
2. I am a very good cook thank you. I actually trained as a chef many years ago.
3. Unless I can enjoy an aperitif and a decent bottle of wine, don't really see the point of going out, therefore not many options apart from 5* hotels in the sandlands.
4. I am not going to change my life
5. I do and I don't need a ferrari!

Ok GT, I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I figure we both have different lifestyles and priorities.

Back to the origin of this thread, I don't think it is possible to rent a room/studio in karama, run a car and live on 7.5K!!

It depends on individuals lifestyle which has ben said over and over again.

I work in bur dubai and stay at rigga

A room in karama, burdubai or deira in shared accomodation -current going rate - around 2000- 3000 ( i pay 2800 including the untilities, net, cable connection, cooking gas and drinking water per month)

If u buy a second hand car( thats after u acquire a license which is a big issue) pertrol expenses would depend on how much you move around ( i go out on weekends, within dubai and need fuel worth around 80-90 dhms per week, if i dont go out on a weekend i can use 50 dhms a week on fuel).

Food - including groceries and meat/fish i usually spend around 100-125 dh a week on on my home cooked food. A sepearte budget of around 500-700 a month if i eat out or go out with friends.

Entertainment- going out with friends, drinks, movies everything depands on how often you do it and weather ur a social drinker or a guzzler. I prefer spending a chunk of it on gym.

A budget of 500 for sudden expenses.

Usually i end up spending around 5-6 grand a month living a resonably comfortable lifestlye. Now whats comfortable for me might be like staying below the poverty line for others. So finally it boils down to you, what u want and what ur aims are.

hope that helps,

Cheers,

J

Since our original poster is from India anyway, there is no point scaring him away by saying he cannot afford the rent on a 3-bd villa, eh? He will probably live like the rest of us poverty-line people from the Indian sub.

You gave a good cost breakdown. Hopefully our newcomer isn't looking for a Paris Hiltonian lifestyle.
