But it seems these articles were just trying to crack/enable the wi-fi and ipod functions without the SIM card attached.

However, in the end just don't expect (yet) to import iPhone from US (asking friend to buy) and think that you can use in other part of the world. You still need to have contract with US AT&T, etc. At least I haven't heard someone can.

I'm struggling to work out what the iPhone can do that my Nokia can't...

but there's plenty my Nokia can do that the iPhone cannot, least of all MP3 and caller group ring tones.

Er... owning an iPhone is not being different though is it? Apparently a million people will own one of them shortly.
