I am currently in North america and it looks like I will be coming to Dubai in August.

On my recent trip to Dubai I received a DVD about the project I will be working on. When I got home, it would not play in my Sony DVD player but did play in an off brand DVD player I have. That got me wondering if there are any issues with bringing my computer over to Dubai. Will I have any problems using the internet or software programs since my computer was originally purchased in North America???

you shouldnt have any problems, i bought a new laptop right before i left the states and it works just fine when its plugged into a power adaptor. most new laptops will convert the power, so all you'll need is a power adaptor. i've been using the new laptop here for a month with no issues.

Your American DVD movies will not work in DVD players and drives here. Unless you get some bootleg brand one, which I think are probably hard to find nowadays. My PC asks me to select a DVD region and that becomes permanent after 5 changes.

i thought most of the dvd players here were multisystem? i've bought 2 dvd players since i got here and they play my dvds from the states just fine.

one is a samsung and the other was a nikoai dvd players.

Good to know. Although the movie companies won't be happy.

Region free dvd players are available everywhere.

Usually the default DVD player bought in Dubai is multi-system multi-region. But DVD players for sale in other countries default to the system/region of that region.

i've seem a lot of "specials" at various electronic goods stores in dubai... rock bottom prices on dvd players in particular, when you have a closer look they are region specific. you normally find this around shopping festival, when the hapless tourist goes back to the outer hebrides with his prized (cheap) dvd player only to find it will only play middle eastern dvd's )
