IT Professional - do I need a degree to work in Dubai/UAE? Mar 22, 2007
Hi,

I'm an IT guy (currently in Australia) with 11'ish years' experience in systems and network infrastructure (Microsoft/Citrix, Novell, Unix-like, Cisco). I've worked for professional services/systems integrators all my career.

In terms of current certs I've mostly been buried in the Cisco world for the past few years so I've got CCDA, CCNP and CCSP. I've got some older ones too, e.g. MCSE (NT and Win2K), CNE (NetWare 5.x), CCA (MetaFrame 1.8) etc.

I know it's all subjective, but I've applied for a bunch of roles in Dubai and have heard nothing back. From reading through this forum I've noticed a lot of other people say the same thing, however I can't help but wonder if I'm getting filtered out because I don't have a relevant (or any) bachelor's degree.

Do I need a degree to be considered for positions based in Dubai?

Or do I just need to bite the bullet, show up in town and start, er, 'networking'?

cheers!

Yes dear, they are looking for a bachelor's degree or diploma. even if you are a wizard in I.T.

For example me, I got CCNA and MCSE : Security specialist. just because I'm High school educated ... I did not find any job.

Any way, cheers up.. we are still alive & a devil still playing around.

Best Regards,

Focus on western companies. To them it is not so crucial - i.e. your experience is the main determining factor.

Oz, send me your CV please - jspoor@horizonintl.com and also check our websiote for positions www.itjobsme.com

E-lad - without being too cruel my local dentist can get MCSE and CCNA and they dont really count for anything without good experience to back them up. Academic qualifications help, absolutely, but nothing is better than good experience.

Degree is required only when you're applying for visa (for designation/job title in the visa). Without degree, you'll probably won't get a manager title.

In reality, you might already know that in IT a degree is not really required. Experiences, skills, attitudes, and professionalism are the most important.

In my opinion, the problem what you're facing is that nowadays those certifications are common. You'll find plenty of them. You're competing with others (mostly from South Asia) with similar qualifications but lower salary standards. Company may see that you are "Westernish" from Oz and would demand high salary (like any other "Westernish") from beginning.

So either you suck up whatever reasonable offer you'd get and then climb up you get here (in other word a stepstone), else have yourself a unique skill/experience/field where not many people have it. That you'll have bargaining power.

Best Regards,

I have an IVY League Education as well as 20 years of experince.. seems like the Headhunters have a problem.. unless and until they see the EXACT PHRASES on the resume as they see in the Job Requirements they do not want to even look at the resume
