The creatures are incredibly intelligent and live in family pods, so in scenes like this, entire families are wiped out in one go. The feel emotion, pain and have to watch their family members being slaughtered in front of them, then to await their own fate.

Dolphins and Whales can also live upto 80 years old, they mature in age much the same way humans do and that's to say that they reach breeding age from around 12 years onwards, so their populations will never get the chance to recover after such massive killings.

The way the are killed is totally barbaric, slow and painful. Japan should be utterly ashamed.

Thanks Choco. I couldn't open the video for some reason - don't think I need to see it, will upset me too much. Signed the petition and so did my kids - they are not all horrible, uncaring monsters.

The guy who runs the petition wants 1 million signatures and he's well on the way to getting it. He will then send it to the Government of Japan, to show the worlds .

Have you seen the different countries that people have contributed from? It's amazing, hopefully we can make a difference.

once i saw on discovery or bbc food channel.

they cut the fish from both side so that all the bones were visible, meat from both side its tummy was removed but they didnt cut its head so the poor animal was breathing and then they put spicy food on its tummy the part from where they removed the meat, they threw that meat...

now on plate there was a living fish lying with bones instead of it tummy on which there was spicy food and its a proper dish and people were eating that spicy food.

i never get it why whats the charm or taste in it..

No offense , but from what you wrote in your first post choco I thought I'd see a video in which animals are being tortured just because. Japanese people eat dolphins, just like you might eat chickens or someone else might eat cows or goats.

They aren't killing them for fun, and they aren't trying to make thier deaths any more painful from what I see, they aren't mutilating them, they are fishing them just like smaller fishes are caught- but these are bigger ones so different ways of carrying them are used. And they are doing it all for food.

If you don't like eating dolphins, don't eat them. But trying to stop others from doing so is the same as trying to stop other groups from eating other kinds of animals or birds which are acceptable to be eaten by you, and if not you a lot of the people commenting in this thread, like chickens and cows.

EDIT: and if someone isn't a vigitarian yet signs such petitions, I view them as hypocrites.

I guess I am going to have to be unpopular with this post - but this is spin and propaganda, using emotive language (and also misleading language).

Firstly, the scenes of slaughter are no different from the slaughter of other animals for food - just as intelligent mammals, such as horses, pigs and more commonly cows.

All mammals and birds will convulse when they are slaughtered, this is normal. Not stunning a mammal is more humane than stunning one - a stunned animal still feels pain and is fearful (studies have shown), but does not convulse as much as a non-stunned animal that just has it's arteries cut and loses conciousness straight away.

My children have seen animals slaughtered as I think they should know where their meat is coming from and have respect for animals. They should know that meat comes from living beings and not shrink wrapped parcels on the supermarket shelf.

By all means, if this is illegal or endangering the dolphins, then this should be highlighted and protested against. However, pulling at the heartstrings of people who have not seen the realities of killing animals for meat is spin and hype and sticks in the throat.

It isn't a 'massacre' - it's a harvest of the sea. It's no different from trawling for fish or culling deer or rounding up steers for slaughter.

Horses are slaughtered everyday for their meat - why aren't people signing petitions against the French and other continentals for this? I guess perhaps it is because they don't let people film the slaughter and put their spin on it?

There is a lot of injustice in the world and a lot of genuine harm is being done to the ecology and flora and fauna - however humans have a right to eat meat and to responsibly harvest natures bounty. The fishing of dolphins and their slaughter for meat shown in the film was graphic, but no evidence (in the film) was given for this being irresponsible or even cruel by fishing or abattoir or hunting standards.

My final thought would be that people who are offended by the scenes would similarly be offended by any slaughter house - but how many would still happily tuck into a steak or a chicken or eat fish?
