The UAE have never won the Gulf Cup before but with home advantage and a top coach, this could be the best chance they have. The last time it was held here they came close but draws with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain gave the Saudis the title for the first time in their history and leaving the UAE as runners-up. It’s a tough one to call as the team that went to the 1990 World Cup – the greatest achievement in UAE footballing history – came dead last in the Gulf Cup that same year, and recent performances have been hit and miss. However, coach Bruno Metsu, who led Senegal to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, has been in place since the summer of 2006 and has already guided the team to the AFC Asian Cup 2007 finals. They’re expected to beat Yemen and the final group game against Kuwait will be very tough, so it could well be all about the opening match again Oman.

I think someone complained about that in 7Days.

There was only sporadic celebrations where I live. Random honking speeding cars passing by with kids sticking out of windows holding onto their headgear. Hilarious!
