Living costs for Western professionals Aug 29, 2005
Greetings!

I have been short-listed for a teaching job in Dubai, but I frankly don't know much about the UAE.

The likely salary would be around US$40,000 per year plus free housing (probably a two bedroom apartment), moving expenses, summer vacation air tickets, and some other perks

Can one live a decent life in Dubai on that? I'm certainly not expecting luxury, but could one at least have a comfortable existence there on US 40K a year?

I would be moving there with my new wife. We don't have any kids. Not sure yet if she would be able to work there or not.

On a related note, could anyone out there compare the cost of living in Dubai with Asian cities like Singapore or Seoul?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

equates to about 148,000 AED per year, roughly 12,000 per month.
Not to bad if the accomodation is included; as you will see if you read through some of the issues on this site - rental is the main expense that most expats have.

i'd say the cost of living is roughly the same as singapore. general cost of living expenses are relativly cheap considering most food stuffs and raw materials are imported.

check whether the summer vacation ticket(s) are single or plural - some places will only give the employee the perk - it does not always extend to family members.

if your wife has a profession she should be able to find work - although she may have to wait a while for the right oppertunity to come up.

get a written confirmation of the "package" - you can post it here for comments :)
