Ok, seeing as i do the SZR/Emirates Road everyday, here's how we can reduce the number of cars and accidents on the roads:

1) Stop the sale of new cars for 6 months
2) cars being re-registered that are over 10 y/o are to be scrapped (cash given in return). The exception is Classic cars. What is a Classic car would need to be defined.
3) NO Pick-up trucks, Mini-vans, Busses, trucks, Mitsubishi lancers (1.3), Nissan Sunnies, Toyota Tercels are allowed in the fast lane of either a 2,3 or 4 lane road. (they never drive at or above the speed limit)
4) In the case of a 4 or more lane highway, Pick-up trucks, Mini-vans, Busses, trucks, Mitsubishi lancers (1.3), Nissan Sunnies, Toyota Tercels are to use the inner two lanes only (see above).
5) Any of the above caught in the outside lanes can be legally pushed off the road.
6) Trucks should use the roads after sundown and before sun-up only.
7) Keep Sharjah registered cars IN SHARJAH. If seen outside of Sharjah, please see 5) above.
8) All cars in Dubai with AUH registrations are to stay in the hardshoulders, cos thats where most of them drive.

YES, I have had a bad couple of days where I nearly crashed on numerous occassions due to the above named cars with above said registrations, and it is seriosuly pissing me off.

Oh how i wish I had a H1 with HUGE bull bars

I must add, I am no expert, just my observations.

1) Stop the sale of new cars for 6 months - There is no way that will happen because everybody needs a car to drive

2) cars being re-registered that are over 10 y/o are to be scrapped (cash given in return). The exception is Classic cars. What is a Classic car would need to be defined.(is my 1990 nissan partol going to be scrapped, no way dude...;) )

(acually i think they should be shot on site dude, like seriously)

6) Trucks should use the roads after sundown and before sun-up only.(why is it more romantic that way? )

7) Keep Sharjah registered cars IN SHARJAH. If seen outside of Sharjah, please see 5) above. (then everybody is going to register in dubai then, that would suck)

so.....what do you think

Actually there's only 3 things that need to happen to ease the traffic and none of them have to do with the cars at all.

1. Reduce the rents, so people can actually live near their place of work. This is the primary reason why so many people travel from one Emirate to another, is they live in a cheaper area, compared to where they work.

2. Make better public transport - sort these ridiculous buses out, allow car pooling and better taxi services.

3. Get the metro up and running at an affordable cost.

Rents in Dubai are never going to get as low as rents in Sharjah or Ajman though, where for 30,000 dh in Ajman you can rent a 4 bedroom Villa!!! People will make the drive to save 10,000 dh a year. Stupid I know.

Better public transport certainly, but it needs to come with dedicated bus lanes. Given the choice, would you spend an hour in your nice car, or an hour in a bus with 40 other people?

The Metro is a joke because people are not going to walk in the heat, and catching a train = walking in the heat..

A successful metro needs definitly needs good feeder buses to each station.

I for one will be glad to take the train although the chances that I'll be here in 2009 are slim, when living in Toronto I never needed a car, many cities are like that, imagine if everyone drove in NY or London

btw the bus stops they're making are A/C'd

That is a very very good point! It would definetely solve many traffic related problems.
Banning SHJ registered vehicles from Dubai roads? That was a joke right? Otherwise it was a really stupid proposal. There are not only workers living in SHJ and working in DXB but also lots of executive and management employees. They are working for and supporting Dubai's economy.

and ^ian^ ... you might have gotten a 4BR-villa in Ajman for 30,000 three years ago... but not any more. The guy who now has my (previous) job in SHJ has just rented a 3BR-villa in Ajman (near the Corniche) and he is paying 75,000.

Cheers,
Ben

You might be able to get a villa in Umm Al Quwain for 30,000 a year, if you are a local and know the owner, but then you have a 2 hour + commute everyday (20 minutes to Sharjah and 1 hour 40 minutes from there to Trade Centre!)

The reason they are making all the access roads into Dubai as toll payable, is not to try and reduce the number of cars on the road, but to try and dissuade people from living in Sharjah and beyond. They want them paying huge rents to the Dubai landlords...not outrageous but cheaper rents to the other Emirates landlords.

Money here only really flows one way...unlike the traffic!

I don't even think they've tried to hide this fact.

New tolls.
Metro not connecting with Sharjah.
etc. etc.

Traffic flows one way if you are lucky. I have to go to Sharjah every day, and I live in Dubai. Takes half-an-hour on Emirates Road. I laugh at people going the other way.

It gets clogged in inner-city roads at night, so I just avoid having to drive at night on those specific roads as much as I can.

To be honest though, considering that so many people work and get paid from Dubai and then go to Sharjah to spend all the money, why should Dubai assist in the process?

Because Dubai is taking the mick on certain things...like rents, trade licences, wages etc. If you work for a Sharjah based company, the salary is lower than Dubai so you simply can't afford to live in Dubai and you have to take the commuting option. Now that the rents have gone to stupid levels in Dubai, even the people who work here can't afford to live here as the wages and rates for work have not risen to keep pace with the cost of living.

Its the wrong way round.
