IT'S OK TO KILL GAYS - BRITISH IMAM
24 October 2006
The leading imam in Manchester, confirms that he thinks the execution of sexually active gay men is justified, the rights group Outrage reported.

Arshad Misbahi of the Manchester Central Mosque confirmed his views in a conversation to John Casson, a local psychotherapist.

Casson said: "I asked him if the execution of gay Muslims in Iran and Iraq was an acceptable punishment in Sharia law, or the result of culture, not religion.

"He told me that in a true Islamic state, such punishments were part of Islam: If the person had had a trial, at which four witnesses testified that they had seen the actual homosexual acts."

"I asked him what would be the British Muslim view? He repeated that in an Islamic state these punishments were justified. They might result in the deaths of thousands but if this deterred millions from having sex, and spreading disease, then it was worthwhile to protect the wider community."

"I checked again that this was not a matter of tradition, culture or local prejudice. 'No,' he said, 'It is part of the central tenets of Islam: that sex outside marriage is forbidden; this is stated in the Koran and the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had stated that these punishments were due to such behaviours.'"

Gay man rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said, "It is disturbing that some British imams are endorsing the execution of gay and lesbian Muslims.

"Imam Arshad Misbahi's homophobic attitudes give comfort and succor to queer-bashers. They encourage conflict and disharmony between Manchester's large gay and Muslim communities.

"Muslim and gay people know the pain of prejudice and discrimination. We should be working together to challenge homophobia and Islamophobia. I hope liberal Muslims will speak out in defense of the human rights of lesbians and gay men," said Tatchell.

Adnan Ali, founder of the British branch of al-Fatiha, an organisation for gay and lesbian Muslims, told Gay.com that "a person with such an obsession about execution of human beings is not even entitled to be addressed as Imam."

"Islam is a very tolerant religion and celebrates the human diversity in its core message," Ali said.

"The holy book Qur'an does not mention anywhere about the execution or killing of human beings on the basis of their sexuality. What surprises is this obsession of the Islamic clerics to killing and execution. Why? What about dialogue? Discussion?

"Arshad Misbahi's comparison of same-sex relation to adultery is nothing but ignorant and utterly irresponsible rhetoric, manifesting the wrong teachings of Islam. The media should . . . not take it for granted as the general view of the Muslim community all over."

peace and tolerance ?

this old goat can go fcuk himself. when I grow up i'll buy a villa in dubai and open it up for all gays/lesbians/bis/transgenders/whatever to have big parties and go crazy. YAY JERUSALEM!! the gay parade 2006 was carried out there even though all religious leaders from all religions had this meeting where for the first time ever they united on one thing, which is hating gay people. HAH ! I bet they bit thier fingers till they bled out of hate n' resentment when they heard the parade isnt gonna be cancelled. If i could be a hitman people like this crazy old geezer would be my first target.

Classic example of how some parts of religion (any religion) don't work in today's society.

Personally, I have no problems with homose xuals. I have many friends that are gay/lesbian and it doesn't bother me one bit. The only problem I have is that I feel bad for them. And dont get me wrong! Read what I have to say carefully. I feel bad for them, because in my religion (Islam) the punishment for those who are gay is quite severe...both in this life and the hereafter.I feel bad because based on my relationships with my friends, i can see that they are just like everyone else. They are good people and do not deserve to be treated in that way.

And that is something that I do believe in my religion. I believe that is wrong, religously speaking to be gay, but I have no problem with those that are...it is their lives, so they can live it the way they see fit. As long as they are not physically harming others or themselves...who am i to say that they are bad people? If they feel happy and content with themselves, who am i to deny their happiness?

Reminds me of the time some Jahovas witnesses came to our student house. We were all sitting around chatting then my friend, who is gay, pipes up and tells them. The women turned around and told him, they thought he was a very nice person, great personality and fun, just a shame he'd be going to hell! Nice!

And anyway who's to know that?

Ive yet to meet a Devout muslim gay anywhere in Europe, where the laws are more tolerant and there are less chance of being executed.

ok look Jamal... SCIENTISTS, not normal people like you, not some sheikh, not human logic-because you see human logic made people think the earth was flat- ,but scientists already proved injecting people with chemicals and hormones dosent change or twist thier s.e.x.u.a.l.i.t.y. k? So next time know what you're talking about before giving your little suggestions. What the police did was totally out of line, and human rights watch should've taken action at the time.

also, it's none of anyone's business what other men's or women's s.e.x.ualities are, seriously people who make such a big deal out of it have the mindset of a primary schooler, "you're gay haha, you're gay haha" grow up and get a life of your own, sheesh...

Some of the comments in this thread are totally sick. People who're gay, are human beings too, they just have a different preference and that's all. I bet you've met loads of gay people and never even knew it.

Many people view homos.ex.uality as a deviancy - for them it is as distasteful as paedophillia.

Religions have taught from time immemorial that humans were created to be social animals and live in family units. Man laying with man is a sin - i.e. against the will of God.

Paedophiles also say they are 'made that way' and that 'they can't help themselves' etc. Doesn't make them right - and everyone rightly views them as deviants who should NOT act on their desires.

For religious people, man should lay with women. That is best for society, and all studies show that a family is the foundation of a stable, peaceful society.

Should practicing gays be killed? Islam doesn't ordain that punishment, so no.

Do I hate all gay people? No, I don't hate gays and know quite a few. They know and respect my opinion, but don't agree with them (obviously) - just like my many friends who drink know my views on alcohol.

It's not all about s.e.x. at the end of the day - it's about being happy and being a useful part of society.

Cheers,
Shafique

Interesting post Shaf. With regard to the religious aspect, once again it's a few 'leaders' enforcing the view onto the many, seeing as homos.e.xual behaviour has been around longer than religions, just look at the Romans and the Greeks for starters.

Also many animal species have male/male relations too. So in light of that fact whose to say that it's just not part of natures progression?

It depends what you mean by a 'few leaders'.

The Bible is crystal clear about man laying with man as being a sin, and all churches condemn the act as a sin. The loophole some western churches have found is that they say it is ok to be a homos.e.x.ual but not to engage in the act.

All the Christians, Jews and Muslims who believe in their respective holy books aren't being manipulated by 'leaders' - they believe in the tenets of their faith that homo.s.e.xuality is a sin.

Infanticide, killing of siblings, cannibalism are also found in nature - doesn't make it right for humans to do.

The urge to mate with one's own gender is there, but it doesn't mean we should act on it or condone those who do. We don't condone those who act on the urge for paedophillia. We punish those that even just look at paedophillic acts/depictions.

As I said, we can hold views condemning homo.s.e.x.uality without calling for the killings of practicing gays.

Do you think all religions had it wrong?

An interesting observation was made by a historian once - the decline of a civilisation comes soon after s.e.xual relations become free and easy (outside marriage) and h.o.mo.sexuality is openly practiced and condoned. Look at all the examples of this and you will find that the period of openly homo.se.xual tolerance comes at the end of the civilisation when it is on the decline, and relatively soon after there is a cataclysmic shift in power and usually a destruction of the places of 'sin'.

The bible describes what happened to Soddom and Gomorrah - that fate fell on Pompey (spectacularly) and other centres that we now only visit the ruins of. Makes one think.

Cheers,
Shafique
