THE BLUE-EYED GIANT, THE MINIATURE WOMAN AND THE HONEYSUCKLE Oct 12, 2006
THE BLUE-EYED GIANT, THE MINIATURE WOMAN AND THE HONEYSUCKLE

He was a blue-eyed giant,
He loved a miniature woman.
The woman's dream was of a miniature house
with a garden where honeysuckle
grows in a riot of colors;
that sort of house.

The giant loved like a giant,
and his hands were used to such big things
that the giant could not
make the building,
could not knock on the door
of the garden where the honeysuckle grows
in a riot of colors
at that house.

He was a blue-eyed giant,
He loved a miniature woman,
a mini-miniature woman.
The woman was hungry for comfort
and tired of the giant's long strides.
And bye-bye off she went to the embraces of a rich midget
with a garden where the honeysuckle grows
in a riot of colors;
that sort of house.

Now the blue-eyed giant realizes,
a giant isn't even a graveyard for love:
in the garden where the honeysuckle grows
in a riot of colors;
that sort of house...

ON LIVING Oct 12, 2006
ON LIVING

I

Living is no laughing matter:
you must live with great seriousness
like a squirrel, for example-
I mean without looking for something beyond and above living,
I mean living must be your whole occupation.
Living is no laughing matter:
you must take it seriously,
so much so and to such a degree
that, for example, your hands tied behind your back,
your back to the wall,
or else in a laboratory
in your white coat and safety glasses,
you can die for people-
even for people whose faces you've never seen,
even though you know living
is the most real, the most beautiful thing.
I mean, you must take living so seriously
that even at seventy, for example, you'll plant olive trees-
and not for your children, either,
but because although you fear death you don't believe it,
because living, I mean, weighs heavier.

II

Let's say you're seriously ill, need surgery -
which is to say we might not get
from the white table.
Even though it's impossible not to feel sad
about going a little too soon,
we'll still laugh at the jokes being told,
we'll look out the window to see it's raining,
or still wait anxiously
for the latest newscast ...
Let's say we're at the front-
for something worth fighting for, say.
There, in the first offensive, on that very day,
we might fall on our face, dead.
We'll know this with a curious anger,
but we'll still worry ourselves to death
about the outcome of the war, which could last years.
Let's say we're in prison
and close to fifty,
and we have eighteen more years, say,
before the iron doors will open.
We'll still live with the outside,
with its people and animals, struggle and wind-
I mean with the outside beyond the walls.
I mean, however and wherever we are,
we must live as if we will never die.

III

This earth will grow cold,
a star among stars
and one of the smallest,
a gilded mote on blue velvet-
I mean this, our great earth.
This earth will grow cold one day,
not like a block of ice
or a dead cloud even
but like an empty walnut it will roll along
in pitch-black space ...
You must grieve for this right now
-you have to feel this sorrow now-
for the world must be loved this much
if you're going to say ``I lived'' ...

Daffodils" (1804)

I WANDER'D lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretch'd in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed -- and gazed -- but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Do You Still Have Hope

If you can look at the sunset and smile,
then you still have hope...

If you can find beauty in the colors of a small flower,
then you still have hope...

If you can find pleasure in the movement of a butterfly,
then you still have hope...

If the smile of a child can still warm your heart,
then you still have hope...

If you can see the good in other people,
then you still have hope...

If the rain breaking on a roof top can still lull you to sleep,
then you still have hope...

If the sight of a rainbow still makes you
stop and stare in wonder,
then you still have hope...

If the soft fur of a favored pet still
feels pleasant under your fingertips,
then you still have hope...

If you meet new people with a trace of excitement and optimism,
then you still have hope...

If you give people the benefit of a doubt,
then you still have hope...

If you still offer your hand in friendship to others
that have touched your life, then you still have hope...

If receiving an unexpected card or letter still brings
a pleasant surprise, then you still have hope...

If the suffering of others still fills you with pain and frustration,
then you still have hope...

If you refuse to let a friendship die, or accept that it must end,
then you still have hope...

If you look forward to a time or place of quiet and reflection,
then you still have hope...

If you still buy the ornaments, put up the Christmas tree
or cook the turkey, then you still have hope...

If you still watch love stories or want the endings to be happy,
then you still have hope...

If you can look to the past and smile,
then you still have hope....

If, when faced with the bad, when told everything is futile, you can still look up and end the conversation with the phrase... yeah....BUT. . Then you still have hope...

Hope is such a marvelous thing. It bends, it twists, it sometimes
hides, but rarely does it break... It sustains us when nothing else can... It gives us reason to continue and courage to move ahead, when we tell ourselves we'd rather give in...

Hope puts a smile on our face when the heart cannot manage... Hope puts our feet on the path when our eyes cannot see it... Hope moves us to act when our souls are confused of the direction... .

Hope is a wonderful thing, something to be cherished and nurtured, and something that will refresh us in return... And it can be found in each of us, and it can bring light into the darkest of places...
Never lose hope...

They say: “silence is the greatest passion”.
For all the feelings you wanted to show and all the words you wanted to say
can be shown in a single look, expression or smile – a gaze which seems to last
forever is interrupted by a sparkle in her eyes

Her presence like a flash of daybreak to the fray and her beauty imbued on angels wings.
But no words are needed for we share the silence.

This silence is like a strain of music, easy to remember, impossible to catch.
And when the silence is about to be broken…a kiss.

No words are needed for as they say: “silence is the greatest passion”.

Priceless Gifts

Life holds so many priceless things
The falling rain -- the wind that sings
Each star on high -- a big full moon
And sunbeams dancing in your room.

The river as it rushes on

A sunset when day is gone
No wealth can buy a mountain tall
These priceless things belong to all.

An autumn tree lends beauty rare

With leaves piled deep most everywhere
As nature wears a glowing smile
to make each day a day worthwhile.

Could anything be quite as dear,

As laughing children that we hear
The gift of friendship that is ours
The miracle of growing flowers.

Each magic moment -- treasured time

These priceless gifts are yours and mine...

TOUCH MY HEART -

Touch my heart and I'll touch yours

With a gentle word or two,
For kindness bears the sweetest fruit
That makes our dreams come true.

Touch my life with tenderness

And fill my cup with love.
Share my dreams as I share yours
Beyond the stars above.

Take my hand as I grow old

And lead me when I'm blind.
Show me that you really care...
Good Friends are hard to find.

Touch my heart and I'll touch yours

A little more each day
And then we both find happiness
Somewhere along the way.

Let me be a little kinder,
Let me be a little blinder
To the faults of those about me,
Let me praise a little more.
Let me be, when I am weary,
Just a little bit more cheery...
Let me be a little meeker
With the brother who is weaker;
Let me strive a little harder
To be all that I should be.
Let me be more understanding,
And a little less demanding,
Let me be the sort of friend
That you have always been to me.

let me love you
let me shine into your world
let me give you happiness
let me let me....

With the darkness closing in, I gaze into the light
The darker my past, the brighter my future
The emptiness ahead is filled with my dreams
With my actions

You never know when stepping in the light
If you are blinded by your future
Or skeptic from your past
Tired of your present

You need a change, you need hope
No more darkness in your life
This leap may be one you fear
But now, the future is near

SONNET LXVI Dec 30, 2006
SONNET LXVI

Tired with all these, for restful death I cry,
As, to behold desert a beggar born,
And needy nothing trimm'd in jollity,
And purest faith unhappily forsworn,
And guilded honour shamefully misplaced,
And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,
And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,
And strength by limping sway disabled,
And art made tongue-tied by authority,
And folly doctor-like controlling skill,
And simple truth miscall'd simplicity,
And captive good attending captain ill:
Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,
Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

Son of Nefertiti Jan 15, 2007
I read "poetry" and I got all excited, only to realize when I actually started reading the poems in here that this forum is female-infested, and is thereby full of lovey-dovey "why did you leave me?"-type work.

I'm not complaining. Most of you have done a beautiful job, It's just that I guess my raw lyrics won't quite fit in here.
Anyhow, I do have this one poem that I wrote as an exception to my usual war-mongering style. It's supposed to be a sort of will for my first born son (totally hypothetical situation; I don't have a son nor am I expecting one anytime soon). There is a fair share of double meanings and metaphorical tripping (I was totally stoned when I wrote it) but It still won me a few competitions. So you guys let me know what you think. Here goes:

Son Of Nefertiti
(last words to my first born)

Son of Akhenatun…
Son of Narjez…
Son of Nefertiti…

These Are My Last Words To My First-Born…

My miracle, my warrior, my vow to reign superior/

Sacred is your blood, never bow to your inferior//

My ultimate triumph over hell and damnation/

My rising dragon, upcoming pride of my nation//

My fruit-laden trees amid faminous times/

My lyrical eruptions during scarcity of rhymes//

My king among slaves during times of despair/

My ultimate justice in eternities unfair//

My vicious wrecker of tyrants, my just erector of nations/

Known will be your name for a thousand generations//

You will grow my prince, to be a king in your own right/

Learn that you'll be seen weak if you don't charge//

You'll wither and fade if you don't fight/

Exercise your right, elaborate your might//

Be the reaper of souls and be the bringer of light/

Envision and create, you CAN subdue fate//

Be a player of roles but lever let - your stars out of your sight/

By any possible means keep your dreams unharnessed//

Individually, ride on TEN armies and still win regardless/

To make them love you or fear you, of all questions, the hardest//

To have them serve or endear you, never fear seeming heartless/

Give them alternate to ancient glories they mourn//

Lead them through battlefields and make THEM blow your war horn/

I've seen so many wars I'd grown bitter and forlorn//

But despite my scars I'm thankful, I lived/

Just to see the first tears of my first-born//

I bear no more scorn, my fears are long gone/

I changed all that sworn and brought forth a new cycle//

New prime objective: Educate my disciple/

I took an oath in blood, no Korans and no Bibles//

On my tombstone I swore to eradicate your rivals/

Chase them into graves, obliterate their vitals//

Never again the fate of your forefathers/

These are, my blood, the ABCs of survival…//

{Verse II}

Blessed if I live to see you blossom and bloom/

Freeze time at your conception, until YOU see fit that the world resume//

My venerable standard bearer, my gentle wiper of tears/

My lion in the battlefield, be respected and feared//

Seek absolute power, but never get greedy//

Salvate the poor and be a hand to the needy/

Preserve your blood and be kind to your people//

Don't expose your mind but make sure your heart is see-through//

Be loyal to your brothers and never let a friend down/

Good friends in this world are very rare to come around//

Be gentle with your mother, she's a wonderful woman/

You'll disagree at times, but then again, she's a woman//

Always keep the struggle very close to your heart/

Never you and the cause spend a moment apart//

When you give life to life be a fierce protector/

But never let anger govern the way you act out//

Never take a life unless it takes another/

And be as just as you know best in this life and others//

Fourteen hundred years and I still can't forget/

Everyday I pray that a better fate you get//

Keep up the fight until the time of my revival/

These are, my blood, the ABCs of survival…//

LMAO  I knew I was going to get my ears pinched by at least one chick, wait till the others read it, then I'm REALLY in trouble lol. If you had read what I had written more carefully, you'd have seen that I stated that this poem was an exception to my usual style. I didn't say I was macho nor insensitive, I just said my style was raw, and in almost every other poem or song I've ever written, it is just that. You would know what I meant if you read any of my other work.
Anyhow, thanks for reading it and giving me your opinion, its much appreciated. And most of all, thanks for thinking it was great lol.

Lol you wanna bet ? Women can be mean evil creatures when you push the wrong buttons.
Anyway, here's a part of something else I've written. You'll notice the difference in style. This still isn't my most grimy, that stuff would be way too complex for females to fathom (I'm sorry I just couldn't help teasing  ).
Anyway, this poem is unfinished (as is half a ton of scribblings I have stashed all over my house). It's just one verse, but I thought sharing is caring so I might as well lol.

Apocalypse Sunrise

Erratic distortions of war-time emotions/

Render obsolete whatever think-tank precautions//

Despite all attempts at the enforcement of notions/

Earthquakes of wrath will inflict upon the reckless the same effects with which - they'll hit the cautious//

Said anonymous dark forces repatriate to mother ships the world's vital resources/

Puppet kings and android heirs-to-thrones await the grandmaster's orders//

Total galactic eclipse, Army of the apocalypse will now come to order/

From the mountains will descend titans and from the valleys arise fighters that make the dunes smolder//

Inhale - the wrath of the beholder/

Legions of doom that bring forth the new order//

Annihilating arsenals, char-broiling soldiers/

Tell who dares to ask, These are the Jeneral's orders//

Insurmountable fury strikes foes with toxic mortars/

Jaw-dropping outbreak of phenomenal manslaughter//

Bloody corpses washing up-shores in numbers light years beyond murder/

Apocalyptic seas,

Downfall of regimes,

As legions of regents kneel down and pledge allegiance-

All praise the almighty for all seems in order

All seems in order

All seems in order ...

Love is Magic Jan 27, 2007
Love is like magic
and it always will be,
For love still remains
life's sweet mystery.

Love works in ways
that are wondrous and strange
And there's nothing in life
that love cannot change!

Love can transform
the most commonplace
Into beauty and splendor
and sweetness and grace.

Love is unselfish,
understanding and kind,
For it sees with its heart
and not with its mind.

Love is the answer
that everyone seeks...
Love is the language
that every heart speaks.

Love can't be bought,
it is priceless and free,
Love, like pure magic,
is life's sweet mystery!....

I AM LISTENING TO ISTANBUL Jan 27, 2007
I AM LISTENING TO ISTANBUL by Orhan Veli KANIK

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
At first there blows a gentle breeze
And the leaves on the trees
Softly flutter or sway;
Out there, far away,
The bells of water carriers incessantly ring;
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
Then suddenly birds fly by,
Flocks of birds, high up, in a hue and cry
While nets are drawn in the fishing grounds
And a woman's feet begin to dabble in the water.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.
The Grand Bazaar is serene and cool,
A hubbub at the hub of the market,
Mosque yards are brimful of pigeons,
At the docks while hammers bang and clang
Spring winds bear the smell of sweat;
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
Still giddy since bygone bacchanals,
A seaside mansion with dingy boathouses is fast asleep,
Amid the din and drone of southern winds, reposed,
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.
Now a dainty girl walks by on the sidewalk:
Cusswords, tunes and songs, malapert remarks;
Something falls on the ground out of her hand,
It's a rose I guess.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
A bird flutters round your skirt;
I know your brow is moist with sweat
And your lips are wet.
A silver moon rises beyond the pine trees:
I can sense it all in your heart's throbbing.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes

THERE'S SOMETHING I HAVE LEARNED FROM WHAT I'VE LlVED Jan 27, 2007
THERE'S SOMETHING I HAVE LEARNED FROM WHAT I'VE LlVED by Ataol BEHRAMOGLU

There's something I have learned from what I've lived:
lf you're to live something, live it to its fullest
Your beloved should fall exhausted from your kisses
You should fall exhausted from smelling a flower

One can watch the sky for hours
Can for hours watch the sea, a bird, a child
To live on earth is to mingle with it
Growing roots that cannot be eradicated

When you hug a friend you should hug him vigorously
You should fight with all your muscles, body, passion
And once you stretch out on the hot sand
You should rest like a grain of sand, a leaf, a stone

One should listen to all the beautiful music on earth
So as to fill all his being with sounds and songs
One should dive into life as if
Diving from a rock into an emerald sea

Distant lands should lure you, people you do not know
You should burn with desire to read all the books, to know all the lives
You should not exchange for anything the pleasure of drinking a glass of water
All the joys should fill you with the yearning to live

And you should live grief also, with honor, with all your being
For grief also, like joy, matures a person
Your blood should mingle with the great circulation of life
In your veins must circulate the eternal fresh blood of life

There is something I have learned from what I've lived:
If you're to live, live big, as if you are mingling with the rivers, the sky, the whole universe
For what we call a life span is a gift to life
And life is a gift to mankind

LOVE IS FOR TWO

The wind changes direction
Suddenly the leaves fade
The boat at sea loses its way
Searches for a port in vain
The smile of a stranger
Has stolen your beloved from you
The poison accumulating inside you
Will kill itself only
It is death which is lived alone
Love is for two

Not a single trace is left
From nightlong lovemakings
Thousands of years away is
The skin you've touched a thousand times
The poems you could have written
Are written and done with
It is death which is lived alone
Love is for two

No consolation to you
Are the songs you know
Pain is unchained
Waters flow backwards
Even if you draw your love like a dagger
It serves only to kill it
The wayward bird of love
Has flown away with no warning
It is death which is lived alone
Love is for two

You're simply a lost song
Consumed and degraded
A child weeps in your dreams
As the night brushes against the windows
For no butterfly
Lives its love alone
No insect is alone
No bird is alone when in love
It is death which is lived alone
Love is for two

ILLICIT LOVE

come through my other door you cannot open this
come with your former eyes come at the time to kill
and be vigilant lest someone should follow you
I have been hiding in this house for a long time
I have changed my name they call me something else
day and night I wear sunglasses
come through my other door you cannot open this
come toward daybreak come with all your eyes

I am getting darker and darker behind the shutters
troubles engulf me and so does the Fall
I am unable to recognize your voice on the phone
your face flows and vanishes away through my fingers
something neeting something broken forever
come toward daybreak come with your former eyes
come through my other door you cannot open this
and be vigilant lest someone should follow you

I no longer exist for anyone
they conjured my loves with enormous violins
my fears have been lonesome for eternity
I am a lonely verse is that why I am getting wet
a revolver completes my novel
the play is over they tumed off the lights
come as if you do not exist come at the time to kill
come through my other door you cannot open this
they locked and sealed it from the outside
and be vigilant lest someone should follow you

FLOWER OF MISERY
exhausted they were at the alsancak train station
flower of misery in the night was the clock at the station
nothing existed but themselves
a treacherous trembling seized the man
his hands were tom they were handcuffed
the wife was canying his bag

nobody knew who they were
flower of misery in the night was the clock at the station
they got on a third-class car
it became clear the man would go
they seemed to have given up something
try what he may he couldn't look at his wife

standing they smoked cheap cigarettes
flower of misery in the ni~ht was the clock at the station
they had already fallen in solitude
past and future in darkness
suddenly they turned pale
quietly the cars began moving

I WANT A COUNTRY

I want a country
Let the sky be blue, the bough green, the cornfield yellow
Let it be a land of birds and flowers.

I want a country
Let there be no pain in the head, no yearning in the heart
Let there be an end to brothers' quarrels.

I want a country
Let there be no rich and poor, no you and me
On winter days let everyone have house and home.

I want a country
Let living be like loving from the heart
If there must be complaint, let it be of death.
