Cash An American Cheque ?

Does anyone know of a good/cheap/quick way to cash an American cheque (issued by an American bank) ?

I heard from a friend they charge $60 for cashing the check !!! :shock:

In Europe the same thing happened to me every time my grandparents sent me some birthday money... half of it went to paying for the cheque cashing bank fee. :evil:
