If you're only going to have it for 6-8 months I would suggest you take a rental matey. No hassles nor stress and you just walk away when its over and done.

Yup i'd agree by XRW-147 and ahmed, 6-8 month...rent a car's best for ya, go for Hertz or Thrifty...they've got the best prices in town at the moment, what's more you can even rent out a Honda Accord you wanted  for about close to 3000bucks per month, which is quite fare for a car like this...check it out

Actually Sal, Hertz and Thrifty are amongst the medium to higher priced rental places. Dollar rent-a-car and United car rental are two of the 'cheaper' places. You can get an Accord Euro for 2200-2400/Month.

Did you need to have a UAE DL? Can you not use your original DL for hiring?

Most companies, when hiring only require a copy of your country of origin DL, passport and a credit card. That is of cos if your country of origin DL is acceptable here in UAE.

Did you have to retake your DL or just swap over?

got american license but they didnt allow direct swap as i dont have an american passport , had to take the written test plus the road test (just the drive on road part, no parking etc).
hmm i never thought of asking them if i can rent a car with the american DL (i dont have an intl drivers license though)

if a rental costs bout 2,500 aed/month will come to about 20,000 AED for 8months. isnt it betterr to buy a used car for about 50,000 aed use it for 8months then sell it off? will a honda/toyota prices go down that much in 8months

Ok forget about renting, like the above people said, buy a car.

Here are some models you can look at.

Starting with the cheapest:

KAT (Knowledge Automobiles & Trucks) - prices starting at AED 22,999
http://www.chery-me.com

Mazda - Galadari Motos - 2007 Mazda 3 Automatic - AED 51,000
http://www.mazdauae.com/galadari_automobiles.html

Nissan - Arabian Automobiles - 2007 Nissan Tiida 1.6 Automatic - AED 49,000 - http://www.arabianautomobiles.com/

Chevrolet - Liberty Automobiles - 2007 Chevy Optra Automatic - AED 37,000 - http://www.libertyautos.com/main.htm

and lots more..

you have a range of choices..

And after 6-8 months, I'll buy the car from you. As long as you haven't done any accidents :)

Actually you are better off renting mate for a few reasons:

1. No hassles with renting

2. No need to stress looking for a used car and getting one that hasnt been abused and will cause you big repair bills! And then the hassle with selling teh car again...

3. You will waste your car insurance since you have to pay for 13 months in advance, they will not refund you the remaining 4-6 months after you sell the car!

4. You should be able to find a smaller, no name rental agency that will let you rent it out.. they might require a small deposit though.. but definitely rent rather than buy if just for 6 months!

I agree! Sep 26, 2006
I'd agree on that ! Yeah mate, i mean 'jag' is right about the hassles of buys...and than selling again...is a big issue here, you're gonna loose 25% depreciation flat! getting your car insured...gonna have to pay around 4000 to 6000 Dhs! what's more if you'll mortgage your car from bank, gonna have show bank account details with relevent amount of money and transactions n sfuff, and salary transfer headache...and than couple of hundred bucks as bank interest of your monthly instalments, you know its a complex process! That's why we all suggested to go a rent-a-car, no hassles at all like every one said  but if you still consider to buy a used or new car than you'll gonna have to calculate the looses you'll face when selling n stuff, its upto you
best of luck

P.S. i mean if you're staying here for a long time, than buying a car is a very good idea! But only for 6-8 months? emmm not recommended :)

I don't agree with your Insurance costs, unles the guy is 18 with no No Claims. Most saloon cars will run you 5-6% of the value of the car. On a car of Dhs50K, well, thats Dhs2.5 - 3K.

The rest I agree with, although 20% is the depreciation % for the 1st year.

Well Sep 26, 2006
Well about the depreciation its 25% i asure you! I recently sold my 2 year old car, and about the insurance thingy? well in some cars only the insurance would be about 2.5 - 3K but yes you're right the insurance depends upon the car type, and engine size too. But at the moment i can tell ya, insurance would in any case be not less than 3000Dhs, man the guy can relax for a month and a half if he pays that amount of money for rent-a-car and relax! So minus that from the time he said which was 6-8 months, that would be now around 5 months! Man what's the use of buying a car for 5 months for God sake  he'd be loosing too much money for nothing :?
Like every one said, rent a car is the best option! no hassles, no tensions, no problems

I would get a nissan altima, price wont go down and its a reliable car..

Wouldnt recommend renting as you will spend 20000 and not get anything in return.

At least when you buy a car, you can always sell it again, and if you decided to extend, you wont spend any more money..

He's still around, hehe. I think I gave car advice a few months ago, but don't remember much. By the way, no car depreciates 25% in 6-to-8 months, unless you drive it into a wall.
