The 'black guy' is Allen West.

He's been an outspoken critic of Islam in the past, saying it is not a religion etc (i.e. typical Islamophobic myths) ... but now he's now 'just' critical of 'jihadist' Islam and that he 'respects Islam'. Should we take him at his word?? The jury is still out.. but that is what he now says (from just last week):

Allen West defends remarks on Islam
By William Gibson

Several religious leaders told South Florida Congressman Allen West on Wednesday they have “deep concern” over his recent comments about a Muslim colleague in Congress and about “your tendency to offer intemperate comments about Islam.”

West immediately replied that he respects Islam, has fought to protect religious freedom and has directed his scorn only at “a radical jihadist movement.”

The flap came over West’s comments at town hall meetings in South Florida and in a recent interview on the “Shalom Show,” a TV program about Jewish life and Israel.

The religious leaders from Jewish, Christian and inter-faith groups wrote a letter to West accusing him of calling U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the “antithesis of the principles on which this country was established” because he is Muslim.

“Regrettably, this is just the latest example of your tendency to offer intemperate comments about Islam,” the letter says. “At a town hall meeting during your campaign, you characterized Islam as America’s enemy and asserted, `Islam is a totalitarian, theocratic political ideology; it is not a religion.’ Such untrue and inflammatory remarks intensify an unsettling trend of anti-Muslim rhetoric and fear in our country. They are also likely to confuse your constituents as to the differences between radical, Islamic extremists and non-violent adherents to Islam.”

The letter was signed by the Rev. Welton Gaddy, president of the Interfaith Alliance; Rabbi Jack Moline, director of public policy for The Rabbinical Assembly; Rabbi David Saperstein, director and counsel of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism; and the Rev. J. Brent Walker, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty.

In response, West said on Wednesday his comments on Ellison “are not about his Islamic faith but about his continued support of CAIR (the Council on American Islamic Relations.”

“It is the extremist, radical element that has hijacked Islam that presents a dangerous threat to both our country and our allies throughout the world,” West said in a return letter. “This radical jihadist movement has no place in the United States of America or anywhere on earth.”

“The problem is, these fanatics are often supported by certain groups and organizations that masquerade as more peaceful moderates,” West wrote. “Organizations such as CAIR have long histories of supporting violent anti-American and anti-Israel terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Muslim Brotherhood.”

West told the letter-writers he shares their goal to exercise and safeguard religious tolerance.

Also being dishonorably discharged from the military for "interogating" an Iraqi prisoner also doesn't help win any crediablity points.

Warped ? At the very least I would say.

Warped ? At the very least I would say.

If the story about his interogation methods is true, I would have done the same.
Don't know if he ever located his captured comrades though.

Wow, I had never heard the Colonel speak before, my only exposure to him was from the hate sites that shafique ripped his article from. He was certainly well spoken and made his point well, better than the vast majority of Westerners who still fail to properly understand what the non-Muslim world is facing.

I'm reminded of what someone I know recently said, he observed how the tiny minority of extremists have made their way into the Muslim governments of the world - from Egypt where Christians face restrictions from building their houses of worship to Indonesia where we see much the same (and the recent killings of Ahmadis too) to Pakistan where Christians tremble at the prospect of being accused of insulting the Muslim prophet lest they find themselves on the long end of a hangman's rope and their village burned down by the ever present tiny minority who seem to erupt at the drop of a Koran.

One must wonder whose Islam is the most legitimate here - the Western Muslim spokesperson living in their comfy 3,000 square foot homes with a nice teaching gig in political science at the local university who would insist everyone is an Islamophobe if they disagree with him, or the scholars of law in Pakistan who openly support a lady's execution because she 'blasphemed' their prophet?

I guess we'll ignore what the Colonel actually said in this video. Wouldn't want people to start forming their own opinions, dontchya know?

What is interesting is that Allen has now changed his views and 'respects Islam' - and he starts by saying that you must study what you are up against.

I guess that he now realises that what Spencer et al peddle isn't actually true? Either that or he has a weird interpretation of 'respecting Islam' and speaking out against only 'a radical Jihadist movement'.

The quotes are from a US Newspaper from his district and is from only a few days ago.
The Sun Sentinel, owned by the Tribune Company, is the main daily newspaper of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, U.S., and all of Broward County, but circulates throughout all of South Florida.

(Hardly what I'd call a hate site  )

I didn't highlight the bit where he clarifies his position in no uncertain terms:

“It is the extremist, radical element that has hijacked Islam that presents a dangerous threat to both our country and our allies throughout the world,” West said in a return letter. “This radical jihadist movement has no place in the United States of America or anywhere on earth.”

It seems that Col West's change of tune on Islam was quite sudden.

On the positive side, if it is genuine, it shows that there is still hope for others who believe the Islamophobic myths about Islam as fact, rather than what West now says above (that he opposes radical jihadist elements that have hijacked Islam, but he respects Islam itself). Perhaps he did take to heart the comments below that his version of Islam was what was being fed to him by loons.

The article in the Sentinel was given last week and was in response to comments he made at the meeting reported in the quote following. I presume he now considers Islam a 'true religion under the First Ammendment'.

So, the moral is - even what appear to be die-hard Islamophobes can reject the myths about Islam not being a religion etc.

..
West was also confronted by Nezar Hamze, executive director of the South Florida chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, who brought up West’s past criticisms of Islam.

“You have consistently demonized and insulted my religion. … You’ve insulted the prophet,” Hamze said.

“I will always defend your right to practice a true religion under the First Amendment,” West said. But, West added, “I’m not going to stop speaking the truth,” and he began reciting violent incidents from Islamic history.

“Your version of Islam is exactly what the anti-Islam people are teaching you,” said Hamze, who said acts of violence “have nothing to do with Islam.”
