Be Thankful For What?

Be thankful for what? Nov 23, 2006
This is the time of the year when we are inundated with propaganda about the U.S. holiday, Thanksgiving. Recently, the History Channel showed its rendition. The same old story: weary Pilgrims were taught how to plant crops in the new land of America by some savvy Native Americans. Then, to thank the Indians and God, the Pilgrims held a celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Everybody had a great time. This was brotherhood among human beings at its best. Then, the documentary went forward in time to the 18th century. What happened between 1621 and 1675 was completely ignored. Most U.S. history books rarely mention the fate of the Indians who helped the Pilgrims survive.

Growing up in the U.S., I was told that we should be thankful and Thanksgiving is the time for this. School teacher-after-school teacher told their students to "thank God" for what they had. There was never any thought or consideration whether the students did not believe in God. God was always present and had to be thanked once a year.

In the sixth grade, I had the audacity to ask the teacher, "What about poor people? Should they be thankful?" I got my cul reamed for making such a flippant inquiry. "Poor people especially have to be thankful," I was told. "God works in mysterious ways." I did not have the nerve to tell her I did not believe in God."

Val, we have many reasons to be thankful for. Like you, you should be thankful you can write well, you should be thankful you have the nerves to argue and stand for what you believe in. So many things to be thankful for. :D

ppl who believe in God do not need a special day to thank him...and that does not have to be only one day a year! (this is my guess although i do not believe in God)

now! why do we all have to take all american hollydays and celebrate like it was ours??? thanksgiving, halloween etc??? that is so crap!

Val,
Thanksgiving is a good time for all people to stop and really appreciate all of their blessings and their loved ones.......As people are busier in today's world, it is nice to really take to heart (I get really meloncoly) and enjoy their families, remember all of the family members who have influenced our lives (that are with us), and just take some special time out for the things that mean the most to us.

I feel really guilty this year (as I did last year) that I am not home to greet my children when they come home to an empty house. Holiday's have always been so special to me and my husband as we love tradition and have always put forth much effort to do what our ancestors taught us to do. As a child, young adult, and adult I treasure those moments. Guess that might be old fashioned, but as I got older I wanted my children to have those special times.

I remember all of my grandparents, great grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles rushing over to our house to be together, eat wonderful food, and share memorable times together. They are memories that I would not trade for, and want to pass along. I would kill to taste my grandmother's choclate pie, pecan pie, stuffing, and more. I am so grateful that I had those people in my life, and was so blessed to have had them as role models. It's a grouning type of a day to be with all of the people that we love.

I will be preparing a feast today at my house for treasured friends met here in Dubai, and will be loving every minute of it (with guilt that I am not at home with my kids, parents, siblings and their families) It is intentional that I do this to side track me just a little here in Dubai with special people to spend my day with. Thank God my children have those family members that are in the states to include them in their weekend with the tradition that means oh so much to us.
