The president of the prestigious sounding Islamic Health Research Association has advocated the recitation of Koran verses to patients to cure them of a number of diseases.

He says Koran treatments have worked in curing many diseases.

I've been made aware of the scientific miracles of the Koran in the past but this is the first I've heard of the Koran's healing properties.

The article didn't say if putting a Koran in a coconut is also an effective treatment method.

‘Quran Therapy’, a unique method to treat patients suffering from incurable and deadly diseases, is becoming popular, as a large number of patients have been cured.

These views were expressed by President of Islamic Health Research Association, Dr. Muhammad Riaz while talking to APP.

Dr Riaz said since the Holy Quran is an enduring miracle of Allah Almighty, which provides cures for human illnesses, both mental and physical. He said a human being can lead a healthy and long life by following the teachings and tenets of Holy Quran.

Commenting on the miraculous effects of ‘Surah-e-Taha’, he said it could successfully cure deadly diseases especially liver cancer and Hepatitis-B and Hepatitis-C. He said one can have spiritual relief be reciting the Holy Quran.....

As Carl Sagan once pointed out - the % of cancer patients who were cured spontaneously (spontaneous remission) is HIGHER than the % of cancer patients who visit Lourdes and pray for a cure for their illness, and are cured.

I personally believe that 'faith healing' is a sham - especially where money changes hands. I do believe in praying to God - and that everyone should and can pray.

Derren Brown did an expose this year on faith healing in the USA, for example, and demonstrated the techniques AND even trained someone to perform faith healing successfully in front of believers in the USA.

Instances where laying of hands, reciting of prayers etc etc do make people feel better can be explained by the information above - either a natural % of remissions or more often, just the old placebo effect.

There are faith healers in most religions. They are as reputable as each other, unfortunately. They are, coincidentally, as sincere as eh when it comes to their motives (let alone backing up their wild fantasies with proof). ;)

Cheers,
Shafique
