Ian's interpretation probably is correct. I've heard similar stories before. It seems these little extortionists are everywhere here.

the USA is more of an "oppressionist" to me. The word "terrorist" is too raw for them I think.

A string of typhoons has been hitting the country the past few weeks, there's actually one now in approach. Just hope none is 'scheduled' during your stay and the event be indoors.

Not sure if it's your first time in Dubai but Just remember that STARING is a popular pastime here, especially by a group of certain people (just stating a fact here). Very very irritating. Your fiance and you (yes they stare at men too) would probably get very less or none of it in areas like Marina.

I think they're being dumb in their reports because they're forced to. This is the UAE anyway, and nobody can say anything bad about it- especially by its own press.

Isn't it that if your pay was cut, work hours will be shortened as well?
It is the reason why companies are laying off employees in the first place- there is no or fewer work to be done.

When I saw this guy in a city center coffee shop, in a dazzling-white, flowing kandura, with very lady-like gestures, svelte, very well-groomed beard and one-liner eyebrows, giggling with his friends to a guy in the counter, I thought I've seen everything.

Last year's (or was it 2 years ago?) was disappointing for me. It was very expensive! I know that the puny portions they serve are meant as samplers, but they should have at least considered adjusting the prices accordingly. 40 dirhams for a stupid spoonful of crab shreds, avocado and 5 pieces of fi...

A solution to this problem is to hire western bus, shuttle, and taxi drivers. Since westerners are the best drivers there is, being highly civilized and all. Dubai can do it!

That's nasty stereotyping. Problem is that nobody (muslims) doesn't seem to condemn terrorism and suicide bombing or they're not visible in mainstream media, so that image of a muslim is perpetuated.

Be a good parent and watch over your kids' internet activity, Khalas! That is, assuming that you yourself have solid enough moral values to avoid such immoral sites.

These sites don't just pop on the screen on their own anyway unless you look for them.

The most dangerous car for me is actually a truck- those white ones with elaborate flowery decors on the railings and usually driven by a pakistani guy (uh-oh...), used to move stuff from furnitures to empty soda cans.
