What about getting out to the park, I thought their is a rather large one close to Karama? That's actually the main reason. Kids don't play outside first because there's not safe space in the neighborhood (roads everywhere and parks are not in walking distance, except the one who live next to it), ...

AFAIK there's no fresh water fishing in the country. The only one is deep sea fishing. Though I read in a travel book that one can go fishing at Kalba Creek (Khor Kalba, under Sharjah emirate), 10 km South of Fujairah.

Law on switching job "unprofessionally"

As there are so many cases like this (and I'm tired of unprofessional people asking about this issue - yea yea people are free to choose, it's a free country, bla bla bla), here it goes. http://www.gulfnews.com/nation/Ask_The_Law/10154995.html A reader from Sharjah asks: I am on a visit visa for the...

Actually the suggestion was not to leave them alone, just to go to the park. When I was a kid (many moons ago) we would walk 3-4 miles to the park. Yes, I often bring my kid to the beach & park (if it's not hot) but then they are not in walking distance and it doesn't happen everyday. Therefore...

It depends on your goal and expectations.

For savings, AD might be better.
For life & environment, Singapore might be better.
Can't mix both I'm afraid.

Also consider your career path. What do you want to be in the next 3-5-10 years. Some places/companies offer growth, some don't.

I've seen the picture of "sandfall" in "Off Road in the Emirates" book. Complete with the map and GPS coordinate. But I think you need 4x4. It's like a small cliff where the sands fall down like a waterfall. Though it's said it depends on the weather (wind) and time. I want to go...

If one has limited contract or worked for less than a year, I've understood. No chance at all to move in the middle. One year ban is applied if the company files it (breaching the contract). In the free zone or not. Confirmed. If one has worked for more than one year with unlimited/permanent contrac...

It's all crap anyway, the bans are a money making scheme, it's not the company that implements a ban, it's the minitry of labour and you can go and buy out your ban for about 3,000 Dhs. A friend of mine just did that. That's true. The ban comes from Ministry of Labour (and Police after reported by ...

Agree with both.

Additional, if you still have bank accounts or need to pay some bills (or to transfer to your parent/relatives) in your home country, Internet banking is also important so you can operate remotely from Dubai.

Here's a good tip for unblocking the blocks:

Be nice to the sysadmin, buy him/her a lunch or two, bring him/her some tea, sometimes he/she will open it to you without you getting into trouble or technical stuffs.

I'm not trying to be funny... sometimes it works ;)

You could be less comfortable if you are traveling in the region (GCC countries). AFAIK if the title in the visa is manager and up, you can avail visa-on-arrival in other GCC countries. Otherwise you need to get a visa each time (exception for Saudi, no matter what title in visa, you need a visa). U...

Hook up an AV/HDMI cable from your laptop to your TV, or better buy a wi-fi digital streamer to stream wirelessly to any TV in your house (this is what I want to buy).

When was it? (Fireworks in Dubai)

Found a picture. When was it exactly? Was it at time of last DSF (I heard the sound almost everyday somewhere near the Creek)? I'd love to see it next time for my photography hobby.

So you think $106 to $250 a month is ok because they come from a poorer country, that is messed up in my opinion. Why should someone make less because they come from a poorer country or not enjoyed the luxuries of me or you? That is exploitation to me - exploiting the situation of the existing leve...

I was not being moaning or demanding (read the wink emoticon). I'm aware that (until I know "Westerners' standard") maybe I'm underpaid for the skills/experience that I'm having now. However, It's not that urgent. I'd like to show first the company that I'm worth it. As of now I'm still ha...

Ban on employees working on visit visa - I agree. I think it's common anywhere in the world. Automatic ban on employees wishing to change job within the country (regardless of zone or years of work) - I somewhat disagree. IMO what is more fair (both for company & employee) is to apply minimum ye...

I had once but I don't remember where I keep it.
For updated one, you can get from bus terminals like Ghubaiba or Gold Souq.

Get Showtime (by dish or by cable from e-Vision). I have it at home. Though not all are there but popular series, comedy, leno, letterman, nickelodeon, are there. I don't recall American sports (specifically ESPN), but some must be there on one of their sports channels.

alas TV is one thing Dubai still needs to catch up on...you will get loads of re-runs, repeats, etc. They show older seasons of episodes and movies more than 6 months after they are out on DVD... In some countries I ever lived in, I think it's common. Otherwise the station can't afford to pay the l...

Khor Kalba (south of Fujairah)?

I plan to go there this Ied holiday (plus some visits to the rest of East Coast up to Dibba). According to one of off-road guide book, there's still greeneries/mangrove/birds and we can go fishing. Has anyone visited there recently? How is it? Apart from that place, any suggestions on interesting sp...

I still believe if it were for less than a year, it'd probably better to rent than buy. The other way around if it were for more than a year. There are many good car rentals with less rent rate than Avis/Hertz/etc. When buying, maintenance cost may not be a problem since you'll have warranty. But co...
