Democracy will be Nightmare for Egypt

Richard Cohen in the Washington Post has argued that democracy for Egypt will be a nightmare*. This is a thesis that deserves to be analysed. What do you think - do you agree with Cohen that the Egyptians aren't ready for democracy? Salon.com has done such an analysis of Cohen's views ... Richard Co...

Re: Egypt: Handy Guide Americans :)

I agree - but this is a 'joke explanation' for Americans, not a 'It's all the American's fault'. Mubarak is the bad guy in this (and that he was/is supported by the US is relevant).

I thought it was funny and serious (and above all, factual).

Iowa Focus Group: Obama is Muslim

A recent piece on Fox News - an Iowan focus group of Republican caucaus voters (so not expected to be pro-Obama to begin with) discusses Obama. About half categorically state they believe he is Muslim - there's a show of hands and a few of them state their belief so there is no confusion. For...

Re: Egypt: Handy Guide Americans :)

k - you seem to be critical that the explanations in the comic strip aren't comprehensive and show all the nuances of the situation. You're right. It is a comic strip. ;) It does, however, state the reason why the US funds dictators. It doesn't say that other nations don't also support dictators too...

Re: Two Men Arrested For Insulting Untouchables Via Video Up

LOL - I love the hypocrisy. When an blogger alleges that Hamas denies the Holocaust, and it transpires there is no real evidence for this - the resident Islamophobes insist that he is guilty because they believe it to be so (not because they can produce the actual full speech). BUT when two presumab...

Re: Foreign Accent Syndrome

Here's another English comedian - he stole the show at the last Royal Variety Performance (the host was very funny too). Cockney accent, fake posh/french accent and the (new) classic - 'Chicken Children!' -

Re: Zionist Trees

It is a bit mean spirited to refuse a gift - but perhaps if they hold out, the JNF will give the Palestinians some of the land they control in the parts of Palestine under Israeli Military Occupation - that would be a real gesture. On the JNF and trees: The JNF has been criticized for planting non-n...

A nice speech by Obama Mr Obama said Egyptians, who have been protesting in the streets for days and demanding Mr Mubarak step down, had made it clear they wanted nothing less than "genuine democracy". "The people of Egypt have spoken, their voices have been heard," he said. &quo...

Re: Zionist Trees

The quote I gave didn't link to a Palestinian objecting to non-indiginous trees, but a Rabbi: The problem is this: "Go Neutral" isn't neutral: many of the forests that Keren Kayemet LeYisrael (KKL-JNF in Israel) has planted are unsustainable single-species plantations, providing little hab...

Re: Musa's Killer 2 B Executed Today

The concept of hell in Islam is covered here: http://www.dubaiforums.com/philosophy-dubai/life-after-death-according-islam-t11871.html#p109703 The reward and punishment in Islam on the day of Judgement is in the hands of God - and He decides. Egypt: Clash Civilisations a Myth

Whilst the vast majority of people around the world are happy for the Egyptian people for ousting a corrupt and oppressive dictator - there are obviously a few people that aren't happy. Some of these are those who believed in the myths that are debunked in the following article - notably that Muslim...

Re: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

The protesters in Cairo and beyond may raise photographs of Gamal Abdel Nasser, because they see him as a symbol of Arab dignity. But, unlike Nasser, the demonstrators are invoking a sense of pan-Arab nationalism that understands that national liberation cannot go hand-in-hand with the suppression ...

I had to share this piece from the Economist - sums up the euphoria very well: Egypt's euphoria Feb 11th 2011, 19:42 by W.W. | IOWA CITY JUBILATION is catching. Re: Mubarak Gone..

So far, so good. The Egyptian people have managed to get rid of a tyrant with less bloodshed than the regime change in Iraq. And indeed, Iraq will be a good comparison of the progress that is made in Egypt. Now, we'll observe what happens and see whether the people will sit by and let the victory wo...

Jews can pray in Mosques - Not Churches

Rabbi Efrati is quoted in Israeli paper Ynet news that Jews can (and indeed should) pray in mosques when they are available in airports etc - rather than praying in the open, or delaying the prayer. This is not news - previous rabbis have ruled the same way. However, interesting to note that Jews ar...
