Re: First British Asian Popstar

SOHF? or was the question too difficult? LOL

Anyway - I'm glad I've got you doing fact checks and trying to trip me up. It is quite flattering, but why don't you lighten up and enjoy posting - this wasn't a 'heavy' thread - it's about Freddy Mercury for pete's sake! ;)

Cheers,

Re: Obama Will Go Down In History As The Presidnt Who Lost E

To be fair, Clinton is now saying that there should be an 'orderly transition' to democracy. I don't think Obama will be blamed for losing Egypt (and I've not heard of anyone blaming Carter for the people's overthrow of the Shah in Iran until this article). The trigger here was clearly the Tunisian ...

Oman: UAE spy ring

Interesting. Oman uncovers 'spy network', UAE denies any links The authorities in Oman says they have uncovered a network of spies working for the United Arab Emirates, according to the state news agency. The alleged agents for the UAE are said to have spied on the Omani government and military. The...

Re: Cousin Marriages Responsible For Pedo Gangs?

Interesting theory - and one that can be looked at by a simple examination of the evidence. One question I have - is the figure for 56 convictions in the past 13/14 years a UK-wide (i.e. National figure) or one that is only related to a particular region of England? (The previous articles and this o...

Re: Cousin marriages responsible for pedo gangs?

This is from 'Pickled Politics' from a few weeks ago does contain stats, and an interesting view of the statistics and what they call the 'scaremongering' on the issue. Jack Straw’s scaremongering by Rumbold 9th January, 2011 at 10:23 am Following the conviction of a mainly Asian group of Jack Straw...

Re: Donation food?

Welcome back datta. Charity is a part of pretty much every religion - and donation of food as charity is a subset of this. Indeed, non-religious humanitarian organisations also practice the feeding of the poor - and indeed let us not forget that many governments around the world do this via social s...

Egypt: Revolution not 'Islamist'

A very interesting analysis of the Egyptian protests (and perhaps a revolution in the making) - and contrasting it with the Iranian revolution. It gives 4 reasons why this Egyptian 'revolution' is not Islamist - some fascinating insights, and clear logical arguments. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ha...

Re: Donation food?

Who is the most deserving of food donations? In my mind, the beliefs of the person have very little to do with how hungry and deserving they are. My main criterion would be: How hungry/poor are they? (when the last time they ate etc) Discriminating based on what I thought they believed in would less...

Re: Capital Punishment

I agree with Dillon on this. I support Capital Punishment as the ultimate punishment available to society, but within a context of just judicial system with all the requisite checks and balances. Not-withstanding that some errors will occure in any human system, my view is that the benefits do outwe...

Re: Cousin Marriages Responsible For Pedo Gangs?

Ah, I was wondering when the next allegation would be thrown out. It didn't take long ;) Shame that it's not backed up with any substance though. 'manipulate stats' indeed. :) Anyway, it is worth reading the whole of Chris Dillon's piece (which was quoted in part above): These remarks by Jack Straw ...

Re: Egypt: Revolution Not 'Islamist'

Well, 'Islamist' does have a common meaning nowadays and is short for 'motivated by the religion of Islam' - as this is how it is used. If you note the author doesn't use the term but explains why this Egyptian revolution is not Islamic (i.e. motivated by religion) in the way that Iranian revolution...

Re: Egypt: Revolution Not 'Islamist'

^Coincidentally, I was reading about Ali Shariati last weekend. He died in 1977 (before the Iranian revolution in 79) but is presented as a major ideological influence on the revolution. Mel, do you agree with the observation the author makes about the last Shah's stance towards Islam?: While Iran’s...

^Oh, I was just testing to see if it was a coincidence that what the Shah's attitude towards Islam in the quote above seemed to match the views you've posted on the subject, and especially as your posts in regards to the Shah's rule have been largely complimentary. I was just asking. On Shariati, th...

Nope Berrin, I'm not biting. I know where you are coming from - and I'd be happy for us to debate the point in the Religion forum (and I think I would agree with your line of argument). However, here we are talking about a contrast between the Egyptian revolution going on and what is termed an 'Isla...

Re: Cousin Marriages Responsible For Pedo Gangs?

So, cutting through the musings of armchair psychologists.. I note: 1. No actual evidence to back up theory 2. No confirmation that these 17 trials of 56 British men since the 1990s is for only one region or a National figure. 3. No explanation of whether the 3 white men, in this sample, and the unm...

Re: Killing For Food?

Datta - could you comment on these references I found. Are they authentic? They quote Hindu scriptures on the subject of eating meat: Manusmriti (Chapter 5 / Verse 30) says, “It is not sinful to eat meat of eatable animals, for Brahma has created both the eaters and the eatables.” Manusmriti (5 / 35...

Re: UK Man Loses Job After 'insulting' Untouchables On Tweet

Actually, this follows other sackings in the UK for what are deemed offensive remarks. The latest and most prominent was Andy Gray (and his co-host) being sacked for making sexist remarks about a lady football (soccer) assistant referee. It would be a bit bizarre if insulting a founder of religion w...

Loons in denial

So, are women also 'untouchable' because Andy Gray got fired or not?

But why no condemnation of the American Christian who killed the dog?

Re: First British Asian Popstar

Actually, Farrokh Bulsara (Freddy Mercury) wasn't mixed breed - his parents were both Gujarati Indians. He was born in Zanzibar and came to the UK as an immigrant when he was 17. He was therefore a British Asian immigrant (as he did get a British Passport).
