The world's gone crazeee! Political correctness gone mad, in my opinion. On the one hand you have the thinly disguised racism/islamophobia brought to the surface in the 'veil' debate and on-going vilification of immigrants (be they muslim or East European) - and then you have this pc madness. Britis...

Most western societies have multiple wives and husbands in practice these days. There is a term 'common law spouse' in English law which gives rights to partners who have not actually had a legal marriage ceremony, but who in practice have lived together and effectively been married. Living with mul...

yujin- you may have missed it, but I am British and a Muslim. Up til March this year I was living in the UK and was quite happy with Christmas. So in answer to your question about 'can't the muslim minority be tolerant about Christmas' - the answer is a resounding YES. Perhaps with the above in mind...

Whilst trying not to feed the troll, it's worth pointing out that Iraq was a secular Arab country under Saddam. Bin Laden was against Saddam's regime because of this fact. Saddam's right hand man, Tariq Aziz, is a catholic (for example) and met with the Pope before the 2003 invasion. Cheers, Shafique

I have to agree with this thread - even the trolls in religion and politics are old hat now! Speaking of hats - I never heard the word 'feather' before and just had to Google it ( I wasn't sure whether it was as-shat, or ass-hat - or someother meaning). Google did not fail me. I now have a word that...

That's having one relationship after another - what do you call it when you have multiple partners?

(I call it cheating or adultery, depending on whether you're married or not)

Divorce is better than a destructive relationship.

The right of divorce is part of Islam. (In the Middle ages this was used against Islam as it was considered too liberal!).

Having a wife is more than just having a female to have s.e.x with. Marriage is a commitment to share your life, home and finances with someone, and take responsibility for helping to raise any children that come as a result of the relationship. In France and other countries, mistresses are common ...

It's good to hear your views kanelli. Much food for thought. Your last paragraph is one I would use for Islam allowing polygamy for the instances where it does make sense, rather than outlawing it completely. Islam doesn't say that we should all marry 4 wives (thank God! :) - but lays the strict gui...

I haven't read all 5 pages of this but correct me if I'm wrong, the mass killing in Iraq is being done by Muslims against Muslims just now isn't it? Do you think that would stop were the coalition to leave? It certainly won't get any better with the troops there - everyone now agrees they are part ...

HIV and Circumcission

Just read this story on BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6176209.stm It's about a couple of studies which confirm an earlier finding that circumcision reduces the risk of infection of HIV. But that's not why I posted it here.. the expert the BBC quotes is a certain Dr Kevin De rooster , direct...

Woah - this was meant to be a light hearted thread! :) The documentary I saw a few years ago on the results of the first study showed that it was the cells under the foreskin that were the point of entry of the HIV virus - removal of the foreskin made infection harder. There were controls to allow f...

Kanan, I assume you must agree that Saddam was destroyed by America, therefore you are taking exception to Fisk's arguement that Saddam was 'created' by America. I think you are saying that Saddam was supported by the US when it was in their interest to do so. What is problematic to many is this lat...

After having studiously avoided the Dubai Forums for 3 weeks whilst sunning myself in Mauritius - I find this piece of good news awaiting my return.

If the landlord doesn't kick us out, it looks like no rent rise for us (as we were new tenants last year) - woo hoo!

Sorry Scot, I have to side with Freza on the point of her title being misleading. The article is the one that states '75%.. profits' and Freza's title encapsulates this. On the more significant point about the benefit to Iraq from these deals, I wonder - why not honour the deals that were made with ...

Like them or loathe them (and most people loathe them), the big oil companies are the biggest because they're the best at what they do. I'm sure any company can bid on the contracts, most won't bother though as they know they can't take them on. I repeat, why not honour the deals made with other We...

Kanelli - I'm inclined to agree with your assessment but would not use the diplomatic terms you used :). However, why would France or Russia be seen as anti-Freedom, anti-Liberty or anti-whatever the US says it stands for? Scot - I find it difficult to conduct a discussion based on suppositions when...

I think you're upset the fact that a small matter of a war, a new government and an ongoing insurgency has changed the rules of the game. It's not surprising, nor should it be that big companies are circling around for the scraps, regardless of their nationality. Oh, I see, that's what I'm upset ab...

France and Russia condemned the invasion of Iraq (as did many other countries). Perhaps the US is giving them the middle finger for their lack of support? As you can see, there appear to be three advantages to keeping the contracts in US and ally hands. 1) Profit 2) More control over political pres...

Wasn't pigeon holing, just generally didn't understand why you would be so upset about pre-war contracts being cancelled. I'm not upset - it is quite normal for a victor in a war to avail themselves of the spoils of said war. Kanelli quite rightly points out this is what the US is doing. What upset...

Seraphim - check out the main story on Gulf News today (gulfnews.com) - you can claim back the increase from your landlord provided that last-years rent went up from the previous year. In any case, the maximum increase is 7% so you should be able to claim back 8% of the 15% increase. Else, take him ...

The USA is kind of a forum moderator nowadays (akin to Dubai Forums). Pick the posts they like and moderate/ban as they like... :) That's right - I hear that Andyba and Arniegang are planning to take over ExpatMum.com to liberate it from oppressive moderators there! :) Cheers, Shafique

US sub collides with Japan ship

I found this news item funny and relevant to here as it happened just off our shores. I suppose it's an easy enough mistake - those Jap oil tankers are so nimble and hard to spot that other vessels are forever bumping into them :) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6243395.stm Cheers, Shaf...
