Kindle 3

I was going to post this in 'high tech' - but it seems a bit lonely down there.

Has anyone got a Kindle?

I've finally taken the leap and got one - it's just cleared customs and should be in my mitts tomorrow. (I like my gadgets - boys and their toys, as my wife puts it!)

Cheers,
Shafique

Re: What Do You Think?

No idea.

I'd like to think that it was a generous tip - but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 100dhs. (Again, not going by nationalities - just thinking of human nature. ;) )

I'd rather be proved wrong and therefore will guess that it was a small amount. Say 500dhs.

Re: Kindle 3

Well, hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to give you all my first impressions. ( I too like my books, but the reviews were great and my boss got one last month - but hasn't shown me it yet, he wants me to experience the surprise of seeing it for the first time, how small and light it is etc). I didn't ...

Re: UK Poll On Immigration

Good questions Bora - happy to answer them. I'll be giving my opinions and won't pretend to speak for others - including my immediate family. (My wife, who is an immigrant herself (from Mauritius) is very, very anti-Immigrants and got upset at the news on telly and newspapers about asylum seekers, b...

Re: UK Poll On Immigration

^Good points RC. You forgot to mention the invention of the game Tetris! ;) You're echoing the first commenator I quoted who stated we should rather look at those who are draining the state, rather than 'immigrant' vs 'native'. In the UK we have the equivalent of the underclass you describe in the U...

Re: I Want To Be Where Shaf...

Come on down - that's a real place and about 20 min drive away, and there are many beaches like that around. (Don't spend as much time as I would like there though - and you may not get totally deserted beaches, unless you know where and when to go). Because of our geography, you can't be more than ...

Re: UK Poll On Immigration

Thanks BB - always good to discuss. You make very good points as well - and your views about social security/taxes are ones I can relate to. I don't want to upset you but the guy, who invented Tetris, was not immigrant but the one, who invened Russian salad, wasn't even Russian but French. I'...

Re: UK Poll On Immigration

^No Berrin - RC is just trying to make the point that the Russians that won the Nobel Prize at Manchester Uni had previously studied at his university in Russia (that university only allowed Russians - I think is what he was trying to say). RC - I'm pro-immigration, so these types of examples help m...

Re: What Do You Think?

^Nice of you to quote the lyrics of a song by a certain Brit Londoner - Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, the son of a Greek Cypriot immigrant! (aka George Michael).

Re: Kindle 3

Ok - been playing with the Kindle for a day now, and first impressions are excellent - it does live up to all the reviews floating around, so I won't repeat the blurb that is found Amazon's site and pretty much every review of the Kindle 3 (and there are loads out there) - I'll just give my reaction...

Re: Kindle 3

Thanks for the first impressions , Lack of scalability on the pdf's makes me give it negative points, How is the build and the feel ? Pretty solid - I'd say I'd treat it pretty much like I treat my net book (when closed) and the Kindle is in the case. It has a 6 inch screen - so I guess it may not ...

Arab world must face its demons

An excellent piece from Al Jazeera by a Christian Palestinian Arab on the issues in the Arab world concerning attacks on Christians. It does not shirk from the responsibility of the Arabs perpetrating these crimes, or the fact that they are indeed misuing Islam to justify the attacks - but also high...

Rape definition

This story seems almost unbelievable. Apparently, in what is claimed to be a representative survey, 61% of the males in the survey thought that forced s.ex with an aquaintance is NOT rape. Almost as shocking that 41% also didn't consider this rape. When it came to spousal rape: When asked whether th...

Russia and Palestine

Re: Jewish Woman Knows More About Quran Than Muslims!!??

Hey TJ - no probs from my end - the more people watch this video the better.

I'm reading her book 'After the Prophet' right now.

I'd only point out that what Lesley describes is what is actually understood by most Muslims (but hey, why quibble over a thread title?)

Re: Russia And Palestine

What's new is that this is the latest in a number of states which are recognising Palestine - and shows the positive news of the diplomatic efforts being made by the Palestinians. The fact that the Israelis were concerned about these moves (and I agree Russia is merely reinforcing what the Soviet Un...

Re: Rape Definition

Nice to see you back again herve. I thought when I produced the evidence that Zahar had indeed given a speech at a rally rather than the imagined interview you were insisting he gave, you'd be gone for longer. ;) Do 61% of UAE men think that forcing an aquaintance (not a spouse) to have s.ex is NOT ...

Re: Rape definition

Herve, do you agree with the 61% of males in the survey - that forcing a friend/acquaintance to have s.ex is NOT rape? I'm also curious as to why you want to turn attention to the UAE.. I hope you are not trying to give us a 'what aboutery' argument. But let me humour you a little. Do you have any e...

Re: Rape Definition

LOL - all I did was ask you for evidence and whether you agreed with the 61% of men in the survey. Are you embarrassed to answer (for the record, I think that forcing anyone to have s.ex is rape - friend, stranger or spouse). My part in this thread was to bring the evidence in the survey. Why are yo...

Re: Rape definition

Thanks for the advice herve. I'm glad that we at least agree that forcing anyone to s.ex is rape. It is because I had this view that I found the 61% figure quite shocking. As for only posting about issues in the UAE - I hope you are as voiciferous when others post material concerning the UK, Canada,...

Again, thanks for sharing your views. Draft UN Resolution submitted

The diplomatic efforts continue apace. A draft resolution has been submitted to the UN concerning Israel colonies that have been built on land captures in 1967 - contravening international law and UN resolutions which clearly state that acquiring land by force is illegal. It is good to see that they...

Re: Canadian Police Arrest Man On Terrorism Charges

Hey herve - I see you've changed your mind yet again. Earlier you were talking about only posting information about the UAE - what happened? Re: Jewish Woman Knows More About Quran than Muslims!!??

She makes such an excellent point about how apparently easy it is to misquote the Quran - and indeed how with relatively little effort one can get to the truth of the message of the Quran. Sometimes the best presentations are the ones which are time limited - this one is under 10 minutes. Cheers, Sh...

Well, I guess it is a good thing that the 'muzlims' you refer to only exist in your fantasies then isn't it. ;) It was this thread that had you insisting the internet hoax about paedo marriages was true. Re: The Demise Of Islam

^Perhaps you're right Bora - I presume you have some evidence to back up this theory that we could check out. How many of the increase in Muslim numbers are down to births and how many due to conversions? You obviously have looked into this and can give us an estimate. I presume you are referring to...
