The status of Arabic as a language is an interesting one. Here are some facts.. Of all the languages in which religious books have been revealed/written, Arabic is the only one that still has native speakers. In fact, there are more Arabic speakers now than when the Quran was revealed. Another fact,...

Apologies for being pedantic - but the 3 wise men/kings could not have been 'Christian' as the religion only came into being after the crucifixion, many decades in time later. Also, Jesus (peace on him), was a practicing Jew who prostrated himself before God when praying (according to the Bible - se...

Kelly - sorry I should have been clearer in what I said - I was agreeing with you that Jesus spoke Aramaic. (Many Christians actually argue that the lingua franka at the time was Greek - to explain why some of the oldest NT fragments are written in Greek - but given that the Romans were in charge, I...

Just on the point about Jesus following the laws of Judaism - all references in the Bible are of Jesus only preaching to Jews and always following Judaic law. He did go against the Pharisees and Priests - but only in relation to where they were going against Jewish law. All food being made lawful to...

I probably think this thread is now off topic and straying into a comparitive religous territory! Arniegang - a good website (a Christian website) that deals with the Bible and comments on the origins and various texts is http://www.bibletexts.com - there you can see what Christians themselves say a...

I am a male wolfseivers.. but thanks for the compliment anyway. There are many noble women in the history of Islam, but I am not sure that numerically there are more wise women than men. However, it is true that pre-Islam the Arabs were a barbaric race (the Quran acknowledges this). It appears to me...

Islam teaches that each person will be judged by Allah alone on the day of Judgement. Not all muslims will be going to heaven. Not all non-Muslims will be going to straight to hell. No where in the Quran does it say that Allah will bar non-Muslims from Heaven. Islam teaches that there is no compulsi...

The short answer to the question why Muslims don't eat pork is that God says we should not. God doesn't actually give a reason in the Quran - unlike, for example, alcohol and gambling (which the Quran says there is some good for man, but as the bad outweighs the good, both are forbidden). No reason ...

Interestingly, I had my first club sandwich when I was in Dubai for the first time in 2003 - made with 'turkey ham' though! For those hog-eaters of the forum, substitute 'dog' for 'pig' and you will get a feel for the aversion we have when pork is mentioned. I have felt physically sick after munchin...

Arniegang - a couple of verses from the Quran which talk of the prohibition of pork: Chapter : 16 (Al-Nahl) Verse : 115 He has made unlawful for you only that which dies of itself and blood and the flesh of swine and that on which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But he who is driven b...

and I'm certainly not infallible - but I am sincere in beliefs, but do occasionally have to eat humble pie when I am wrong.

Muslims believe in Jesus as a true prophet of God and the Messiah for the Jews foretold in the OT. The Quran covers the birth, ministry and even records a conversation between God and Jesus that will take place on the day of judgement (Jesus will be asked whether he instructed his followers to worsh...

Cool page.. let us know when it is completed.

I'm totally unfit and need to get myself back up to a semblance of my former self.. hoping to turn a new leaf when we get to Dubai. Certainly want to swim more and ultimately want to get fit enough to kite surf.

This is an interesting development and I hope that there will be a positive outcome. The ANC and Mandela were branded as terrorists and eventually gained political power. DVD Recorder with HDD

Hi, We have got so used to being able to pause live tv and record programmes to hard disk (we have had a Tivo and now have Sky+) - that I have decided to buy a DVD recorder with HDD. We are moving out to DBX in 4 weeks, and would like to compare availabilty and cost with machines here. For less than...

There was a recent programme on TV in the UK recently that looked into the reasons of the Iraq war - one of the points that I did not realise was the fact that Saddam Hussein was in the process of linking the cost of oil to the Euro instead of the dollar. Not a good move if you want to stay on the r...

However Arnie - all the instances you mention are +intended+ to cause offense, because of the hatred that is felt towards the people being insulted. Two wrongs don't make a right -...

Excellent point Maad - one the powers that be should answer!

Interestingly, the film Syriana (which was filmed in Dubai!) and stars George Clooney, Matt Damon amongst others excellently shines a light on this issue.

Thoroughly recommend the movie if you can get to see it.

The Cartoons - UK press comment (yes, another thread!)

In the Evening Standard (London) of 6 Feb 05, the following article by Peter Oborne on the editorial page struck me of worthy of reproduction: Here is an extract "I do not think that a great issue of free speech is at stake here. Even if I did, I wouuld never want to die in a ditch to defend the rig...

Liban, I look forward to your posts about the Prophet's (pbuh) conduct when facing adversity. I'm sure it will shed light on a little known aspect of his life (outside of those who have studied the history of Islam).

A couple of facts.. The majority of Muslims don't speak or understand Arabic - they will know the prayers in Arabic but won't be able to speak arabic. The situation for citizenship in the UK has now changed and requires knowledge of English and the British way of life. There is an exam on this - cov...

No problems with having models in Islam. Islam says that there should not be free mixing of sexes (genders - the forum seems to translate s£xes as "fun") - but there is nothing wrong about having women modelling clothes or make up, for example, for other women. I guess there isn't anything wrong eith...

Arnie - my post was half in jest - Liban is right, the notion of models as we understand them is not appropriate in Islam, as men and women aren't allowed to look at each other freely without modest dress etc. Muslim women do look at what other muslim and other women wear - that is a universal trait...
