Before we all get too gushy and hippy - human nature is such that we have always needed laws to stop people from misbehaving and hurting others. My view is that we always will. Given that governments are made up of people, self interest will always provide the temptation to do ill to others. That is...

Israelis release Nasrallah

Thought the title would catch your eye! :) It's true - but it's not the Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, but a 60 year old shopkeeper that the Israelis 'captured' in a 'daring' commando raid in Baalbeck 3 weeks ago. Civilians were killed in the incident and at the time the Israelis said they'd captured 5 Hi...

I think this was a bit of a storm in a teacup. When it was first reported, the headline read something like 'UAE resident turned away from London Eye for speaking Arabic' - but in the body of the article it was made clear that they did eventually get on the eye after they had deposited their bags in...

shafique I agree with you on your assesment of the people that watch the mainstream US media. But the fact that many Americans are politically apathetic and have choices to view other media channels does not in any way excuse the propaganda that exists and permeates US media. Truth is being hidden ...

Freza, I'm struggling to see who you are having a go at. The presence of biased media is a consequence of freedom of speech. Not all US media is biased - many channels are criticised by the US administration for bias against the US Government! If you are criticising the media channels that are biase...

Nice attempt Serpent - good to see that you've mastered the internet and the keyboard, but perhaps you can ask your mom (or some other adult) to explain to you punctuation - the use of capitals at the start of sentences and full stops at the end of sentences. Or perhaps it is because you are typing ...

I actually like the WTC - it's an honest building with some style, somewhat reminiscent of some of the early NY skyscrapers. My vote would be the Karama Market buildings - now that is only reminscent of a run-down council estate in the UK - the one's that are getting pulled down. Cheers, Shafique

Zoots - I meant the council estates they're pulling down in the UK - not Karama. At least, I haven't heard they're pulling it down :)

There's a climbing wall at the Mall of the Emirates in the 'Magic Planet' arcade by the rides. Last time we were there it was mostly children climbing.

There's also a climbing wall at Wellington school - but I'm not sure if it's open to the public outside school hours.

Cheers,

Sniper - the interview with George was on Sky - a UK news channel, owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox. I doubt whether Fox will be interviewing Galloway. The interview, I would contend, is a sign of freedom of speech and freedom of reporting in the 'West'! Interestingly, this interview is no...

I note in the news that in NY they are prosecuting a businessman (of Pakistani origin - but this is to be expected in NYC :) ) of the crime of providing access via satellite to the Al Manar news channel - Hizbollah's tv channel! I think all he did was provide satellite installation that included the...

Chocs - the news is a bit dated. The 12 were questioned and released with no charge and were let to travel onwards. Their crime apparently amounted to them taking out mobile phones. I think there have been at least 2 more incidents of planes being diverted etc - one Irish plane from the US where a p...

Hmmm. I've just read this thread for the first time - up to Chocs post above. Before Ian's long post above, I was thinking along the line of 'Choc' - i.e. "why the skepticism - Americans protesting against injustices in the UAE is a good thing, loads of good guys in the US after all'. Then Ian'...

Kanelli - I've spoken out about Saddam Hussein gassing Kurds. Two wrongs don't make a right - Saddam was an oppressive dicator and was supported by the US who supplied much of the weapons that killed tens (if not hundreds) of thousand muslims. Invading Iraq has led to the death of more Iraqis and pr...

Kanelli, The US after the gassing at Halabja tried to blame the attack on Iran and not Iraq. It was only years later that the CIA changed it's tune and blamed it on Iraq. This is fact and can easily be verified by a search on 'Halabja'. The gassing took place during the Iran-Iraq war in 1988 and the...

Agree Chocs - war is nasty. However, there still is a set of International Laws and most of the world has signed up to an International Court of Justice that holds people and countries accountable for breaking laws they have signed up to. War crimes should be denounced (at the very least) and punish...

Kanelli - re. cluster bombs. I refer you to the article linked in the original post above. Human Rights Watch is the one saying that Israel committed war crime of dropping cluster bombs in civilian areas. You will therefore excuse me if I take their viewpoint rather than your one which says 'Israel ...

Yes, it always rubs me the wrong way when I see countries complaining about war crimes when they have commited them themselves. I can never forget that the US chose to use nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Modern weaponry is dirty and nasty. If armies fought like in the old days, with limi...

Shaf, by the way, what is IDF? I'm reading the Human Rights Watch report and they mention IDF without writing out in full what it actually is. The report is definitely saying that they can find little to no evidence of Hezbollah launching attacks from some areas where Israel dropped bombs. As Freza...

Agree with you Kanelli - it is sad. Just read the news story about the Israelis hitting a Reuters car and injuring a journalist in Gaza. The initial excuse from the IDF was that the car was not marked as 'Press' and that they are sorry for this. On the face of it, it sounds plausible - I heard this ...

Hizbollah - winning the hearts and minds

I know it's been widely reported that Hizbollah is not just a military organisation but has political, engineering, educational, health etc arms, but I thought I'd link to an article in the Financial Times giving some interesting insights into the reconstruction efforts of Hizbollah. http://www.ft.c...

These types of chain letters have been making the rounds for some time now. Basically II is rubbish - you can't open your car via a mobile phone.
