Totally agree Chocs.

Changing the subject slightly - have you seen 'the power of nightmares'? I certainly have become more skeptical after seeing that documentary.

cheers,

UAE - the documentaries are on YouTube, there is a thread about this on this very forum. If you do a Google search for 'Power of Nightmares' you may find other sites that host copies of this - eg. Information Clearing House has a copy on-line. Kanelli - I can't access these from work, but I can down...

Well - finally picked up the car today, one day late due to a courier not understanding the fact that an early morning delivery for insurance papers did not mean 7pm at night! The car is better than I expected - I didn't realise it had voice controls which I get a kick out of, and the bluetooth work...

Please be more specific? Do you want a comparison of the UAE vs Israel? UAE has more oil, a lot more sand I'd say some good beaches etc, whilst Israel has more historical sites etc.. Or perhaps you mean track and field? I think Israel has the better athletes, but the UAE have great equestrians and s...

I have to say that I do think Sky's reporting was balanced as well - just last night the presenter was interviewing an Israeli military spokesman and gave him a really hard time - asking uncomfortable questions and at one point saying something like "you are just telling us political ideology, ...

Chocs, glad you approve of the post on Sky. (Certainly a marked contrast vs Fox) Re Al Jazeera: They still link to those sites! Which in my view is an advocation of what these groups are trying to do. So it makes them just as bad. You won't change my opinion of the channel! You are entitled to your ...

Good post Bushra. I agree that we should not go around blaming a whole people for the actions of nation states or groups of its citizens. I agree that it is unfair to brand all Americans as supporters of Israel and behind the injustices in the Middle East. However, it is always worth looking (and mo...

This was a timely thread - my brother is on transit here at the moment on the way back to Uni in the UK, and we wanted to go out tonight as he flies out tomorrow. I've booked us on to the Danat dhow cruise tonight - 175Dhs per person - after reading this thread and following the link to the Danat we...

Interesting fact UAE75 - I've been assuming that they did link to sites showing the beheadings, based on what Freza and Choco posted. But if they did not actually link to these video sites, then they are in the same boat as the BBC etc. As I said before, i don't understand Arabic so don't watch al-j...

Fair enough Chocs. I've started learning Arabic - but I've got a long way to go... the hope is to be able to watch some of these channels eventually! As a general point though - sometimes the decision about what to show and not to show is not always clear from a journalistic perspective. For example...

toy bombs, toy bombs? I hope that this isn't a reference to cluster bombs which are particularly nasty - but I have to say, I haven't heard any references on the news sources either. re: David Frost.... you mean you didn't watch 'let's go thruuuuu the keyhole' ? :) (I used to catch Frost on Sunday o...

A quick report on the cruise. In brief we all enjoyed the cruise and dinner. The cruise started promptly at 8.15 and finished on time at 10.15 - doing one circular route going down towards Garhoud bridge, turning round and going back up the creek towards the gold souk end and then back down to the m...

Well now here's a crazy idea for you! Why don't they just re-outfit planes, so that passengers are placed in isolation pods and sedated for the duration of the flight. If people aren't conscious, they can't do anything can they, plus think of the cost cutting - less staff, no food or drinks require...

I'd prefer a kid's charity or even Lebanon relief - but I'll go with whatever the DFers and the 'cuttee' decide.

Well, a cost of $95m may seem like a lot and certainly there has been a lot of disruption. However compare that cost with the cost of the Iraq mis-adventure (and not to mention how much the bombing of Lebanon must have cost) and the consipiracy theorists would argue that this $100m would be consider...

Chocs/Kanelli - the conspiracy may be to over-blow, hype, exagerate the threat. There is already much evidence that the threat from Al Qaeda has been over-hyped. Look at the Madrid bombings for example - it took a full investigation before it finally came out that there was no Al Qaeda link after al...

Hey DG - I can't see any anti-American post in this thread.. am I missing something? Who/What are you having a go at. The person starting the thread is a Westerner who posts provocative anti-muslim messages, so I'm surprised you've chosen to vent in this thread (Israel-Lebanon thread has some strong...

Kanelli - It's an assumption based on his posts, screen name and avatars. The screen name is a reference to the Knights Templars and a reference to the crusades - confirmed by the current avatar. If he isn't Western, then he's deliberately taking the 'Western' view point and taking pot-shots at musl...

However, the fact remains that a group of radical Islamists killed hundreds of people in the US, Madrid, and the UK. I keep hearing people criticising the US government for doing nothing about Al Qaeda when they bombed the US embassies in Africa. Kanelli - the Madrid bombings weren't related to the...

No apology needed DG - sometimes you just need to vent. It just seemed strange to do it in a thread started by a troll (IMHO) and in which there weren't any provocative posts (I laughed at Nick's post). If it's any consolation - I don't have any truck with those that outrightly condemn all Americans...

9/11 and Al Qaeda - your perspective

I'd be interested in hearing different opinions on what people think 9/11 represented in terms of : 1. How many people were involved in the 9/11 attacks - how many actually had knowledge and gave support to the attacks? 2. Why did Al Qaeda carry out the attacks? 3. Roughly how many people died in th...

Kanelli - good point, you are right. I guess because most of the Israeli's I've met are European in origin (many hundreds of years in Europe) as opposed to those who have been in the East all along, I tend to subconciously classify them as Western as well.

Point taken though.

Thanks for clarifying that you didn't think Al Qaeda were involved in Madrid. I was just reading Wikipedia about 9/11 and Al Qaeda, here's an interesting snippet from the Al Qaeda entry Is al-Qaeda a global network or a small organization? Al-Qaeda has no clear structure, and this permits debate as ...
