I do think that resolution 1559 should be implemented - Hizbollah should be disarmed. However, I think that this should be done at the same time as all previous resolutions on the area - if all these resolutions are implemented then there will be much less support or even need for an armed wing of H...

Nick, Yes, Hizbollah are Shia muslims (which I am not by the way). When Israel invaded Lebanon 20 years ago, they just walked by the UN forces there and walked over the pitiful excuse for a Lebanese army. The result was a massacre of Palestinians in Sabra and Shatilla and then years of civil war whe...

Jag - sounds good. The new 3 series looks awesome. No, I haven't been able to even view the car yet - a bizare situation which I may tell later on if things go well. Hopefully will be able to view it on Thursday. Currently trying to line up financing - but will probably end up going with my bank HSB...

Kanelli, There is also security and national identity to go along with peace and stability. To take an extreme example, when Germany occupied France some French took the view that peace and stability was better than fighting for freedom, others did not. The chain of events actually leads back to the...

Choco - to extend the analogy, the husband was guilty of bad mouthing the wife, restricting her allowance, not allowing her to go out freely and occasionally slapping her when no one was looking. She complained to his friends, but they said that she was his wife and he had the right to keep order in...

I forgot another part of than analogy: As the husband is pummelling the wife and kids, the wife is defiant and once in a while lands a blow on the husband. The husband keeps telling everyone 'look, she is still hitting back, I have to defend myself'. The father-in-law now stands in the kitchen (who ...

(At the risk of ruining the analogy ... I couldn't resist extending the analogy a bit further) there are rumours that a women's lib movement in a neighbouring house has urged the wife to stand up to the husband. The women in that house have decided not to put up with oppression from their husbands. ...

Choco - I did Google it (first thing I do these days) and it wasn't yet - but I may have typed republican guard instead of revolutionary guard... hmm, I'll go back and have a look.

Mraph - trust me, you aren't alone (just ask anyone who the bad guy is in all this :) )

Still no news that I could find about the revolutionary guards.. would expect this to be big news. Choco - I thought you were referring to even more UN peacekeepers being killed, rather than the 4 (Canadian, Finnish, Chinese and Austrian) were sheltering in a bunker when they were killed yesterday. ...

Apparently the UN contacted the Israelis 10 times for them to halt the attack on the observation post BEFORE they killed the guys there. I'm sure they will manage to white-wash the incident, but it will be mighty interesting to see the spin on this. My money is on a straight 'sorry guys... we didn't...

Who are the prisoners?

Interesting article on BBC website on the prisoners on both sides: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5211930.stm Since the first Palestinian uprising began in 1987 the vast majority of security prisoners held in Israel have always been Palestinians. According to official figures supplied to the...

:) If we're wrong, then there is nothing after death - then we will have spent our lives trying to be good for no reward or punishment. But if there is a reckoning... I'd rather be in the camp that believed and tried to do good. That's just me of course.. Note that I haven't said that anyone should ...

I don't think its ignorance that causes hate - sometimes the more informed you are the more you hate the injustices that are carried out. Also, there are many who have absolutely no problem with 'Western' culture and values when it comes to technology, clothing, music etc and have great relations wi...

You reap what you sow

An insightful look at the history of Israeli attacks on Lebanon by the BBC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5222154.stm The interesting points made are that it was the Israeli actions that led to the creation of Hezbollah in Lebanon and also the rise of popularity of Hamas in Palestine!

Wouldn't the people of Lebanon rather know when you're going to tell the Israelis t...

How about the gassing of Kurds by Saddam - was that terrorism? Or just genocide? How about the guys who armed Saddam? Are they guilty of supporting terrorism? How about regimes that supported the overthrow of democratically elected governments? Hmm - let's see, Chile, Nicaragua spring to mind. Or ho...

mraph33 - interesting point about the F16 and nuclear capability. North Korea, one could argue, shows that if Hezbollah had nuclear capability, then Israel would not be killing civilians right now. You reap what you sow - Hezbollah grew out of a need for a resistance to Israeli occupation of Lebanon...

Implementation of all UN resolutions. In a nutshell - Israel gives up all land occupied after 1967 and allows Palestinian refugees right to return to the land of their ancestors. Compensation and restitution should be given to Israelis who will need to give up possessions etc, and compensation/resti...

Mraph - utopia is where you start, then negotiate.. I would agree with your assessment of what would be acceptable to Israel, but the main hurdle will be the removal of the injustice felt by the Palestinian refugees. If right to return is not allowed, then at the very least substantial compensation ...

Mraph - ironically, your utopian solution is exactly what was promised to the inhabitants of Palestine of the time. Before 1947, Jews and Arabs peacefully co-inhabited in the region for millenium and a half, with only a few minor exceptions. In the run up to 1947, there was a great influx of Jews - ...

Interesting. I've just read through the article freza provided the link to. However, I actually find very little to disagree with t...
