Shotgun shooting in Dubai

Hi, I'm moving out to Dubai in March 06. I can see there is a good shooting range at Jebel Ali - but my question is about bringing over my own shotgun. I shoot game and also clays (more clays than game of late). I shoot over here in the UK and have my own gun (and of course a licence). I have found ...

Recommended Movers from UK to Dubai (and prices)

Hi, I'm in the process of getting quotes for moving a 3 bed semi worth of furniture from the UK to Dubai. I have got Pickfords and Citymoves coming in to give me quotes. We need a 20ft container with full packing and unpacking service. Citymoves have quoted about £3000, while the allowance I have is...

Thanks GAB - I'll give them a call. Chocoholic - it's just a hobby and you may be surprised to find that the sport is not made up of Rambo wannabees - but mostly of people who find it more enjoyable than golf (I certainly do!). That said, it looks like I may be playing more golf than shooting next y...

Volvo XC90 - opinions please

Hello, I'm coming over to Dubai next year, from the UK, and have been reading up on the traffic and general state of driving. Having a young family, and wanting to protect them and myself!, I have decided to buy a couple of 4x4s when we get there. I have a travel allowance of 2.4k pm and have decide...

Any kitesurfers here?

Does anyone on this forum kitesurf?

I'm looking for advice on buying gear and bringing it over - will be shipping over our furniture from the UK.

Cheers,
Shafique

I think it was a parasailing(?) accident (where you are attached to a parachute and pulled along by a boat). The line got detached and the young boy was killed when hit a building.

This is different from kitesurfing (but this also can be dangerous, I hear).

Thanks cocoholic - I've been reading up on it and agree that I'll wait to speak to the guys before buying. It looks like there is quite a learning curve. We stayed at a hotel in Mauritius last year which was next to a popular kitesurfing beach - looks great. However, I didn't have the time to take i...

I'm an old person with kids too! We'll see if I can eventually cut it with the young surfers!! :)

We're looking forward to the beaches - especially today after we have seen the first snow of the year here in the UK.

DBX soul - yes, the UAE won gold in one of the shooting disciplines (double trap I think) at the olympics, and a few months ago the world cup shooting competition took place at Jebel Ali. The olympics gold medalist was a member of the ruling family - he was also a squash champion a few years back. I...

SatNav/GPS - will the TomTom Go 300 work in Dubai?

Hi,

I've searched in vain on the TomTom websites for maps for the UAE - does anyone know whether there are any maps that will work with a TomTom Go 300?

I see that the higher end cars have DVD sat nav - what maps or systems are recommended for these?

Many thanks,
Shafique

Does Etilisalat block BitTorrent search pages? I use Torrentspy.com to download tv programmes from the States?

I have a 2mb connection at the moment - how much would that (or higher) cost in Dubai? Is the cost different if you have direct connection in Springs?

Cheers,
Shafique

Sean, I have had quotes from CityMoves and Pickfords now - the former quoted £2900 and the latter quoted £2600. Both for full packing service, but excluding insurance at 3% and 3.5% of the goods respectively. This is for a whole 20ft container. However, I think the price is negotiable - I told CityM...

My view is that as a Muslim I oppose all injustice - there is much injustice around the world. Israel does commit state terrorism, as does Russia in Chechnya - China in Tibet - the military in Burma etc etc. There are very strong Jewish lobbies in the West - and it is also a fact that the Media, leg...

Thanks XR I was thinking of the Volvo because it has good reviews, is very safe and has 7 seats. I've done a little more research and can see that the Prados and Landcruisers also come in 7 seater versions. I'm now considering whether it would be better to get two Prados or Landcruisers - but both s...

Thanks for the info - looks like my brother is getting the TomTom then when we leave. Shame - it is a very good piece of kit and will be sad to leave it behind. What software are you using for the GPS?

Arnie, Liban explained the significance of Haj very well. The pilgrimage itself though pre-dates Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) and commemorates the spirit of ultimate sacrifice shown by the Prophet Abraham and his first born (Ishmael). The Arabs from pre-history have been commemorating this eve...

Arnie, Haj takes place on fixed days of the Islamic calendar - which happens to follow a lunar cycle (the month in which fasting occurs is called Ramadhan and the month in which Haj takes place is called Dhul Haj). Therefore, like Ramadhan, the days on which Haj takes place varies each year (moving ...

GAB,

Very useful post... but you've forgotten that essential cost for the 40inch Sony LCD tv (12,000 Dhs), satellite tv costs and cost of adsl internet connection..:)

But seriously, good to see the cost of the staples you've listed.

Cheers,

Arnie, Islam is the pinnacle of religious evolution - it is the most recent of the world religions and is the only religion that itself claims to be the final, global religion. Let me explain. Islam teaches that all people have been sent messengers from God. However in history, one person could not ...

Arnie, You are welcome. Firstly, Abraham's two sons were Isaac and Ishmael. Moses is a descendant of Isaac, Muhammad is a descendant of Ishmael - both are law-bearing prophets. There were many non-law bearing prophets - such as Joseph (one of the sons of Jacob - who was also known as Israel, and Jac...

This is what the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said on the subject "All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any super...

Arniegang - whenever a muslim mentions the name of a prophet, they say a prayer to show respect to him. In the same way that a knight of the realm is always addressed as 'Sir', so muslims show respect to prophets and even companions of prophets. The highest prophet in status - for the fact that he b...

The Quran says that Islam is the final religion and no new religion is required. If you go to the tread 'Tragedy in Mecca' you will find I have explained the Islamic stance vis-a-vis earlier religions (that they are all valid, but were limited in time and space. All these religions state that a new ...
