Excellent posts - I really enjoyed the insights and questions of the contributers! My view is that the fundamentals will always come home to roost - money can't, ultimately, be created out of nothing. 'Bubbles' where prices are bid up by speculators who saw what gains were made by previous investors...

No man is an island. Societies need rules to function. The more civilized a society is, the more rules there are. No rules = law of the jungle and survival of the strongest, while you are strong. Given the need for rules, who gets to choose these rules? Religion provides a set of rules, and many cho...

I've spent time in NY and could easily get a job there. However I'm a recent expat am in Dubai with my family. For me, the answer to the question NY or Dubai is obvious.. and I've voted with my feet. The biggest con with NY is the violence... the stresses of the city combined with an insane view of ...

Agreed Mr&Mrs - I think your sentiments should also apply to nations as well..there will be less killing all round if that were the case! I also note with dismay that the killing has re-started in Sri Lanka. Interestingly I have not found one media source linking the suicide bombings there to Hi...

Kanelli, I have a few relatives who live in Toronto and we intend to visit one day.

Toronto has a lot going for it.. but the guaranteed snow and -20C temperatures in winter... brrrh... (but then again, I haven't experienced the summers here yet!)

:)

I worked with Iraqi Kurds in 1990 and they told me of the abuse that the Baathist regime in Iraq (with Saddam Hussein at its head) were carrying out. Many people were crying out against the abuses then, including the likes of Amnesty International. However, the Baath party was helped to power by the...

G - explain to us then why the US military doesn't even care to count the number of Iraqi casualties in the war and whether you are saying the US never killed any civilians in this war? Does thinking there are combatants in a civilian house make it a military target that should be bombed? Intentions...

Concord - I blame the media more than the movies. I was apalled at the daily reportings of shootings in NY (and Conneticut for that matter) when I visited. And the stats speak for themselves. I think no one would argue that in terms of personal and family/kid safety, Dubai comes off more favourably ...

Most, if not all, of us here also agree with you that deliberately targeting civilians cannot be condoned in any way.

Concord - safest large city makes me wonder what the others are like! :) Bowling for Colombine had a great contrast of a Canadian city vs Detroit - literally across the the lake from each other, contrasting the number of gun related killings! Just to do a quick reality check and to ensure I wasn't b...

Arnie - the British people do have compassion and do donate to good causes. The victories in the two world wars weren't done out of compassion for other people - they were for national interests. It was only when Hitler invaded Poland with whom we had a treaty that we entered the war. After the war ...

Sleep with your husband on the street may get you into a little bit of trouble. :)

I'd do a search on hotel prices - you should be able to find somewhere to fit your budget.

Good luck

You should be able to save on that salary - the only thing missing from your package that I can see is a travel/car allowance. But even that is relatively cheap here.

Good luck.

Whilst we can all express our particulare viewpoints and interpretations of events, let us not forget that we all are revulsed at the killing and humiliation of human beings. Rape is a crime and a heinous one at that. I hope that we can agree on that and condemn all injustice and amically discuss an...

Arnie - as long as you have the battery hostage, of course I agree with you! :) Choco - I hadn't heard about females from the UK and US being raped and tortured in Iraq.. so you are right about no one 'harping' on about this. Was I mistaken in believing that there weren't any such abuses commited? T...

I have to admit this is the first time I've heard of allegations of rape etc of Private Lynch. It wasn't reported in the British media in a prominent way is my only explanation - I read papers and watch the news every day. Choco - the mistreatment of combatants is one thing, that is war. In terms of...

Choco - what can I say, I have no recollection of the reports. I've gone back and looked at the BBC archives and they do report the allegations which arose in her book in Nov 2003. Prior to this there were no such reports - all said she had no recollection. I do remember the other news stories about...

I guess we were lucky - our container wasn't touched, apparently the customs guy took a look at the jammed packed container and took the agent's word for it that it was household items (he looked at the manifest). Our movers cleared the container through customs as part of the package price... all o...

No arguments about the situation being a mess Choco. Rape as a tool of war is not without precedent - it is still being used in Uganda by rebels, and was used in the Bosnian war (so much so that there are significant numbers of children born as a result), the japanese had sex slaves in ww2 etc etc. ...

We ended up buying all our appliances from Plug-in - they beat Carrefour's prices, but initially insisted they don't discount. Getting a discount via X sounds like a very good deal. Lionheart - in regards to the insurgency, what people are referring to in terms of terrorising the population are the bombings of civilians and religious shrines. The attacks on Shia targets can't be viewed as anti-US. What are your views on this? Women and children were killed by 'insurgents' accor...

One thing that does stick in the thr...

Choco - the greatest source of animal suffering in terms of meat production is battery farming of chickens for eggs and intensive farming of chickens for their meat. In the scheme of things, those against animal cruelty and who want to actively campaign against this should direct their wrath at thes...

Choco - I have to say that I agree with your views, I'm against animal cruelty too. I've never bought foi gras to cook, but have tried it on company lunches - similarly with veal. Choco - one point I disagree with you on is the suffering of an animal slaughtered according to Muslim or Jewish religious law (Halaal, Kosher). The requirement is that the animal is concious and the jugular only is severed, with spinal column left in-tact. You state that the animal is still alive a...

Choco - the problem with the bolt method is that if the heart isn't beating, the blood isn't bled out from the carcass as effectively. This makes the meat less safe for consumption. Note, and confirm this with your vet friend, that a beating heart does not equate pain or conciousness, and a still bo...

Anyway - at least our intentions are aligned, we both agree that animals should suffer the least amount of pain or di...
