You are welcome. First, let me point out that this is not a 'Muslim forum' per se - but one relating to Dubai and some of us here are Muslim. If anything, I think the practicing Muslims are in the minority here ;) However, I am more than happy to share my knowledge with you and suggest other sources...

Chocs - I agree with you, I also think that in most places outrageously offensive slogans etc are banned, if only out of a sense of courtesy, if not the law. There are different cultural norms as to what is found offensive though, and also how demonstrations etc are characterised in the press/media....

I agree that cultural norms are what set the level of freedom of expression. I think we have to accept that these norms change constantly. The US is in a state of high excitement over Islamist terrorism being carried out wordwide. Agreed. I have argued that to a large extent the excitement is due t...

^ Thanks for clarifying - I wasn't aware of nostradamus' track record.. I agree with your observations and hopes for Iran. I do think there is more than a small element of demonising of the enemy going on (I mean, Kuwait and Saudi by all accounts are more oppressive regime than Iran - but they play ...

At least the Canadian justice system doesn't believe the headlines and sticks to the facts. If you want to believe that some kids entrapped by a police informant are not the numpties the police informant says they are, then it would appear that your prejudices mean more to you than cold, hard facts....

rats - so how is flying dutchman? ;) I guess you must be 'ikka' from the other forum - and see you are still up to your old tricks. When the questions get tough, you get personal. Ha, ha. ;) So, I ask how many victims the one example you counted had, and you decide to not answer the question. Not su...

I came across this quote this morning and thought it apposite here:

Try finding more convincing and broad evidence rather than rare, specious incidences that occur in every society.

^ But give rats/ikka credit - he did manage to count to 1 terrorist who was a Muslim convert! rats - I'll give you a helping hand (as it's ramadhan and I feel charitable) - the number of victims killed by your one, sole, successful numpty terrorist was 26. His name was Germaine Lindsay and he was 19...

Fanboys - look away

The resident pro-Israeli regime fanboys won't be happy with this excellent article from Haaretz: Let me highlight just one paragraph (but please read the whole article): A country that constantly demands boycott from the world and also imposes boycotts itself, cannot play the victim when the same we...

Viking - I totally agree that the Israeli voices against the injustices are in stark contrast to the situation in the Gulf generally. As Levy says above It is precisely the Gordons, those who fight from within, who are repairing slightly the horrific damage that has been done to Israel's image in th...

It appears the Canadian authorities wanted to get some return on the $4.5m paid to Mubin Sheikh and another informer. Mubin Shaikh and anothe...

ronson - interesting question about what Islam teaches about fate. In a nutshell, Islam does say that God knows what will happen - but God is not bound by time (so 'later' is not a concept for God). We are certainly bound up by events, but also have choice and what will happen to us will be influenc...

I said the number of civilian victims is countless. I presume you understood this to mean 'a large number'. I agree that Muslim and Baathist terrorists have murdered many civilians, but I have stressed in my earlier posts that I do not include their crimes under the civilians killed by the British ...

kid - what viking wrote in his last post is very insightful and thought out. From my observance of life and politics in Dubai, I have to say that I have a lot of sympathy for his view and believe it could be accurate. The doubt I have about the accuracy only stems from the lack of transparency in th...

This is an interesting discussion. I fully empathise with Uaekid's views - the shortcomings of the UAE administration are recognised, but generally it is felt they have the interests of citizens at heart and are doing well by them. The issues with foreign policy etc sound like 'realpolitik'- i.e. we...

^I never hesitate to condemn any terrorist acts - doesn't matter who carries out the killings. I don't automatically accept Fox News stories as true though - but when anyone kills civilians, I condemn it. You ask how I define fanboy - well, one definition would those posters who resolutely refuse to...

You really must try and keep up rats. I said the numbers of civilians killed by British military are 'countless' and asked you whether you thought they numbered more than 26 or not. Asking me to count for you is really not on. I really don't care how you want to label the numbers of civilians killed...

Ahh, and so the game ends. How sad. We have a touching reluctuance to embrace reality by rats, who continues to cling to his belief about rampant wide-eyed boogey men terrorists despite his own stats showing that despite the hype, only one convert terrorist could be counted who killed 26 people. Rat...

Yep.

You can't have been in Dubai long - for there is a long list of issues in a similar vein which you could categorise as 'hypocritical'. Drinking and gambling come to mind - with the latter being more open than the first (but very thinly - and cynically - disguised).

I think rats is feeling a bit jaded after having to count up to one. Interesting that he chose to bring up an article from over one year ago, which - IRRC - was discussed at the time. Not surprised that rats is still living in the past - but to give him credit, at least this is more recent than some...

Israel: A Stalemated Action of History

I found this article fascinating and enlightening: Israel: A Stalemated Action of History 08.25.2009 | Counter Punch By GABRIEL KOLKO In late 1949 I worked on a boat taking Jews from Marseilles to Haifa, Israel. Jews from Arab nations were in the front of the boat, Europeans in the rear. I was regar...

Re: Terrorism in the US - the facts

Seems to me many of these so called 'Acts of Terrorism' could be explained as simple insurance scams or petty rivalry between business people. Well, given it was an FBI list - I wouldn't be surprised if there is some dodgy data in there. However, 209 bombings out of the 318 terrorist acts sounds to...

Re: How To Spot An Islamophobe

The fight for soul should be harder than the fight for life! If you do a search for 'evangelical buddhists' you'll find that there is indeed such a movement, and indeed - it read to me that the guy who wrote the article I quoted above was a convert to Buddhism. However, your point is well taken. The...
