Despite what I wrote above... Not sure that 'The Apprentice' is a reality show, but I enjoy watching that.. I also think that the original relality shows which follow real people around - eg the 7 up series of programmes are really interesting from a social history perspective. I also enjoy the 'fak...

I'm far from a philosopher HP - and my wife and I share the same views about life, so we don't discuss these issues. I just get told off for not doing enough around the house.. :)

I think it funny that 10 years ago in the UK we used to find it fascinating to watch clips of Japanese programmes such as 'endurance' where contestants would do stupid stunts. We all collectively shook our heads and thought it weird that people would do such things and wondered why anyone would watc...

Choc - war is ugly, no doubt. However, we have the Geneva conventions (which the US flouts with Guantanamo Bay). What makes this conflict a little different is that many think it was illegal and unnecessary and that the US and allied forces went in under a banner of 'liberation' and freedom. Some li...

Arniegang, I used to work with Kurds in the late 80s and 90s when they were being oppressed in Iraq and Saddam was being armed by the West. I have no love lost for Saddam. That said, I'm not sure I get your point - Saddam was bad, agreed. He killed many people, again agreed. In fact he got the gas h...

I like these types of debates - I am glad that so far people are reading each other's opinions and no personal insults are being exchanged. I'd like, however, to justify and clarify what I said in previous posts for Arniegang - so there is no misunderstanding and also to explore where we may have di...

Point taken Arnie - and no, I haven't considered running for parliament! :)

It annoys me when people argue using false analogies, I shall be more careful to link my examples.

All religions teach the sanctity of marriage. Religious people who remain celibate before getting married enter marriage with the purpose of spending the rest of their lives with their partner and forming a family. That is the goal of the relationship and the expectations are the same on both parts....

Choco - let me define marriage in terms of my arguments. Marriage is a public committment that two people are exclusive. This covers 'common law' marriages, which is a union recognised in UK law. (Edit -I also want to add that your point about it being harder to find a partner these days is, in my v...

I'm with arnie on this one - it was not only raining in London, it was actually sleeting earlier today! It's very cold outside and everyone is commenting on how sunny it will be Dubai next week! Then I get to the office and read all these posts about the rain! :) In terms of safety, I've looked into...

Arnie - I agree, the only thing is that the XC90 comes out top for safety, but I think we will go for recentish landcruisers as they appear to be better value and better resale values.

It's now dark and raining... brrgh..

Richard, firstly welcome. Could you explain to me exactly how the company could 'disable' the 8 ports? This is a genuine question, not rhetorical or sarcastic, just exploring how you came to this view. P&0's revenue is largely from the Far East, the US ports only generate 12% of the revenue. The...

Thanks for your reply (I'm not American, so excuse any stupid questions I may ask) 1. Can you clarify what the national guard is and whether they are authorised to conduct operations on US soil. 2. Aren't you just as at risk from industrial actions - say port workers striking - as you are from say D...

Thanks for clarifying what the National Guard is - and good luck with your efforts in lobbying Congress. Can I ask why the underlined phrase gives you cause for concern? Would you still have a concern if the word 'Arab' were substituted by 'Japanese', 'European' or 'American'.. How are 'Arab causes'...

My understanding is that Catholics believe that the pontiff is also infallible, similarly the patriarch of the Orthodox Church is held to have infallible views in regards to religion. Shia muslims believe their Imam's are also infallible. First let me clarify that proclamation of faith or Shahada do...

ROM, as with Kanelli - I continue to fail to see any justifiable concern. You equate Arab with Islam - a fair equation in the most part - but then seem to be equating Islam with terrorism and as an enemy of the Western way of life. I will be charitable and put this down to a misunderstanding of the ...

ROM - I maintain that there are no inconsistencies in the teachings of Islam. The first revelation in the cave of Hira does not mention that knowledge is fire.. perhaps you can clarify where this assertion comes from. The majority of the Muslims of today are not Arabs - in fact they were in the mino...

For clarity, the first revelation received in Hira was the initial verses of Ch 96: "In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful. Proclaim thou in the name of thy Lord Who created, Created man from a clot of blood. Proclaim! and thy Lord is the Most Bounteous; Who taught by the pen, Taught man ...

Ok, a few easily answered questions that will clear up some misunderstandings: 1. Muslims do not have to dress like arabs, most muslims do not. Converts do not have to wear arab dress. They are free to do so if they wish, as a sign of their conversion, but this has nothing to do with Islam. Non-musl...
