And then I might also point out that Islam prohibits worship of idols... and yet all throughout the UAE you see pictures of Sheikh Zayed, Mohamed and Khalifa. Where I come from, that is called hypocrisy. Coming from Britain, I've also found it odd that many countries have photos and paintings of th...

Re: Prohet Mohamed imagery and other imagery in Islam

It does at times seem quite silly though. If you didn't understand or even know this part of Islam (i.e. portraying prophets) then the TV show I watched the other night would have come across quite ridiculous. Most sensible teachings taken to extreme or out of context will seem nonsensical - that i...

Point noted... and a living guy I can understand... like, thanks for the benvolance Mo'. But Zayed has passed, and I believe the continued adulation is akin to idol worship. You could say that, but I couldn't possibly comment. :) I'd be interested in hearing from someone who can make a good argumen...

Bush or Saddam - who has hurt Iraq more?

I hate polls, so won't set one up even though this is a great question to ask. I think that the combination of sanctions, invasion and occupation has led to more Iraqi misery than under the Saddam era. Am I wrong to think more Iraqis have suffered under US-led intervention? I'm a simple type of guy ...

try posting a poll in Kuwait or poll the Kurds or maybe ask the Iranians Shaf. Also everything happening there is being reported now, whereas previously, under Saddams regime, many 000's went missing and never heard of again (compliments of the Republican Guard) The Kuwaitis, Iranians and Ku...

The logic in my first question was whether the invasion has caused more harm than good - and basically on a scale of human suffering I think it has. We are grown up here, and so we can be honest and say that the invasion was not done for the sake of the poor Iraqi people or because Saddam was an opp...

Everyone wants to jump on the Bush bandwagon, but when the atrocities were committed by Saddam against the Kurds and Kuwait, lets be totally frank again here Shaf, no one apart from the Btits and the Yanks really gave a shite. If the GCC/Arab nations really cared then the situation in Iraq could be...

You are not being simplistic Shaf, i think flawed and biased is a better description. For example. The trade embargo on Iraq was exactly that. Medical supplies and other "essentials" were allowed in. But how you put your point made it seem that it was the fault of the west. All Saddam had...

I too hope that future for the Iraqi people will be rosier.

Encouraging news indeed. I've noticed recently that BBC journalists and UK politicians tend to say 'so-called war on terror'. As for America not forgetting/forgiving - I don't have a problem with them working towards getting the terrorists who were behind the 9/11 attacks. I wonder when they will re...

The Inscrutable Occidental

The following is from a blog http://dubaiatrandom.blogspot.com/ I found it thought provoking The Inscrutable Occidental On this day, 7 December, in 1941, at dawn in Hawaii, the Japanese military engaged in a surgical strike against a US blockade. The rational Japanese mind could not begin to fathom ...

Two early cr...

I don't see why voicing opposition to US war crimes would be in any way supporting war crimes of the Japanese. In a similar way, I do question some of the RAF bombing raids on the likes of Dresden and similarly view the bombings on London in WWII (my first flat was in East London and was built upon ...

Einstein also doubted his own theory of relativity - introducing a variable that he later had to re-tract.

He was also famously a slow starter - apparently not showing much promise at school.

That said, he came round to the 'correct' decisions in the end.

As horrid as the imperial forces were, I cannot bring myself to condoning the killing of civilians in Tokyo as a retribution for Pearl Harbour. Similarly - as despicable as the Luftwaffe bombing raids on London were, I cannot condone the scale of the bombings of Dresden, Cologne etc These were batt...

Oh, and 'I wrote' when we finish with 'war crimes' of the USA, perhaps we can move on to the mere acts of international terrorism that were perpetrated in the Far East - here I'm referring to the illegal bombings of Cambodia which Kissenger ordered/agreed to despite not having declared war on them. ...

arnie - I for one am glad the allies won the war. As for war crimes - I agree with you these should be reserved for the most ghastly crimes that go beyond the pale. I think the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki do fall into this category because of the sheer number of civilians killed....

This question is too easy. Bush has hurt Iraq more and we all know that the US/coalition should never have gone in. This should not underplay how hideous Saddam Hussein was - not by a long shot. In any case, what does my opinion matter - this question is best put to Iraqis since they are the ones l...
