I know there's a long running feud with that site, but I have to say that I have been concerned that there may be some spyware or something linked to this site. With 2 other forums I go on, I've noticed that the newest member is sometimes the same newest member as on DF (with the DF reg happening f...

In the UK, the magazine I subscribe to would arrive before the end of the month.

Getting it sent here, it turns up sometime between the 15th and 20th of the month after.

You'd have been quicker using a carrier pigeon.

I should add sometimes it takes less than a week. It really depends, but coming from Europe it really is terrible when compared.

They're obsessed with transcripts here, even final year are often asked to provide a transcript of previous year results before getting interviews. No, your degree is fine. Just say there are no formal transcripts given in the UK (well, I remember my breakdown came in a separate letter to my degree ...

You'll be tied in for a year rental. Anywhere in Greens and Marina is fine. There is an oversupply of flats at the moment so a) negotiate the price, and b) don't buy, the market will go down in the next few years.

Yup, faith schools in the UK are obliged to take a percentage of non-believers if they ask to join.

The embassies from which your qualifications are from will attest it in UAE, for a fee of course.

I don't know what country you come from but be very aware what you're signing up to both on the mortgage front and the house front. It ain't like the US or Europe here, you have a lot less rights. As for the Palm, speak to some structural engineers before buying, they may very well advise you agains...

Hard to say without further details, but essentially if you don't plan to ever come back to the UAE get on a plane and don't look back. If you ever want to work here again you may be in trouble.

Yup, as above, the UAE embassy is in Knightsbridge but if you have time then send it to the FCO who'll pass it on, you'll waste your life in queues otherwise.

There's loads of housemaid/ nannies here, as you'd expect you get a mix of good, bad and indifferent but many of the best ones come with references and so can be trusted. Would imagine it's easier to source someone here as visa and extra bits will be a real hassle for someone new to the country.

So true on lots of it! My mum had 4 boys who used to come home from school every day covered in mud from playing football in the rain and didn't mind. Actually, on that point you missed a part about kids being entirely happy to be dressed in hand-me-downs from older siblings rather than demanding th...

Erm, so if you're English and you love him why not get married???

Can't see many other solutions and it seems the easiest by far. You can't sponsor a visa for someone if you're not married and you legally can't live together here.

Coming from Scotland it's the only thing I miss - smoke free bars. What gets you here is that people don't smoke in restaurants as such, more have conversations whilst wafting a lit cigarette in everyone else's face and having about 2 puffs of it. Roll on a smoke ban, it's for the good of everyone.

Hope, Sorry to say that no matter how many obstacles you’re facing in the UK, it will still be easier to proceed with as many avenues as you can there as you are a citizen of the country and there are more options open to you. The legal system on gaining residency in the UK may not seem fair to you,...

So what's your alternative solution?

It's a very good idea and I honestly back it. If it means "70%" of Dubai workers actually shared transport than all taking their own car to work every day then the problem is solved.

I didn't say not stay together, I was just saying that if you're going to fight your case in the UK or the UAE you've got a slim chance of success in the UK against a practically zero chance of success here.

Yes it's normal here, but it varies in amount and often it's just a token that won't cover the cost of a house. You're better having your remuneration in base salary anyway as that's what your annual bonus plus end of service bonus (you get various weeks/ months salary depending how long you stay ev...
