Do not buy the chunky hp pavilions (series dv4000 up). I have a dv5000.. The chasis is very flimsy- wherever you put pressure on it makes a sound. it's in Japan also. South of Tokyo, east of Fuji. It's got onsen (natural hot springs), mountain villages, cool fresh mountain air, cable cars, great view of mount fuji, etc... very laid back atmosphere.
As for kyoto, I plan to visit there next year actually
