Re: New DF

I'm getting used to it. It definitely looks a bit more cluttered, but once using for a while my eyes will know where to look for the info and will skim over the ads and crap.

Re: Sheik Essa Aquitted.

I saw part of the video and I can say that it looked like he knew exactly what he was doing. He didn't look intoxicated by tons of different drugs. (Was there a blood test done to confirm that he was intoxicated?) He looked like a brutal human animal, displaying behaviour that can be seen by those w...

Re: Women who support child marriage and wife beating!!!

It always disgusts me, no matter what religion when I see any verses that women are allowed to be mistreated by men. When the world religions are created by men, what can you expect? That's why I can't bring myself to be anything besides an atheist. Technically, according to Christian tradition, I s...

Re: burkha wearer in go-kart accident

It is possible to wear modest dress and cover one's head while go-karting, it just needs to be more form-fitting, so this tragedy did not have to happen. If someone were to insist on doing sporting events with dangerous loose clothing, then they need to realize that those safety people can stop them...

Women's rights...Read Infidel?

I've really been thinking about Islam, women's rights and immigration issues after reading Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. It was a very interesting read that brings up important issues. So fascinating to see her perspective change over time... What a life she has lived! Has anyone else here read it?

Re: Rape Allowed In Bible?

Abuse of women mentally, physically, financially etc. is present in every religion and is ingrained in all world societies to this day. So, a couple of guys can be on here bickering about stale religious passages from two (of many) misogynistic religions, while women every day in every country face ...

Re: Women's rights...Read Infidel?

Well, doesn't make for good discussion if no one hasn't read it themselves. People are of course entitled to their own reviews of her books, but I wouldn't write her off based on others' reviews. I can see how Muslim men would be very rattled by her opinions, but it would be great to hear what some ...

Re: Rape Allowed In Bible?

Yes, in my opinion both Christianity and Islam are misogynistic religions, as is Judaism. Wow, I'm going to be real popular now! ;) I remember watching my friend married in a Dutch Christian Reformed church (and marrying a Catholic which was a controversy in itself). The pastor was saying that my fr...

Re: Women's Rights...Read Infidel?

Well, Muslims assimilating in non-Muslim societies in the West for example, would have to accept secular education systems and secular laws. Women would be free to dress how they like, have freedom of movement, freedom of choice who they marry, a set legal age where they are permitted to marry, and ...

Re: Rape Allowed In Bible?

Well the volume isn't as significant as the severity of what is actually said. Both were a pretty depressing read! Atheism is best for me, because I could never submit to any God with those attitudes towards women. I'd be going to hell anyway, because I could never behave how any God wanted me to. :)

Re: Women's Rights...Read Infidel?

But doesn't the class system permeate all of Indian society, no matter what religion? Stoning is extreme, but I don't think my examples were extreme at all, and they represent quite well what happens to many Muslim women who come from a more strict Muslim background. Shaf, do you get hassled by fami...

Re: Rape Allowed In Bible?

And that's been a struggle for me, because I have a hard time accepting any personal faith because I just can't submit to a God who doesn't think I'm equal and who sets up women in society to be controlled and abused, whether the issue be big or small. Atheism and humanism do have a guideline which ...

Re: Women's Rights...Read Infidel?

I checked out the web link and the site presents Islam in a very good light, but some of the info they give there seems to differ to what the Quranic verses say. According to the Quran, women are said to be worth less than a man etc. but instead the website says men and women are two parts of a whol...

Re: Women's Rights...Read Infidel?

Shaf, A good question :) I will look around for more of Hirsi Ali's interviews to see if she discusses whether the version of Islam she was taught and lived under may be tainting her view of the faith as a whole. She is certainly brave for speaking her mind. Her intentions seem good - to improve the...

Re: Women's rights...Read Infidel?

event horizon, as Shaf already linked before, there are plenty of passages from the Bible that describe women in a similar way, and modern Christians like to brush those off too. In fact, I think it is welcome to ignore those passages, because it will improve the status and treatment of women in tha...

Exactly. Ultra-conservative patriarchal religious folk of all denominations have done pretty heinous things to women in children in the name of their religion.

Re: Women's rights...Read Infidel?
