Re-post "Domestic Violence"

Since mods just filed the old thread into Fight Club instead of removing the troll crap and leaving the rest of the useful thread in the General Chat forum, here is the re-post. Yesterday my wife and I were in the lift of out apartment and got out in the car park basement. On the other side of the l...

There was a refuge here, I read it was in trouble landlord-wise but I think it found a new place. Maybe ask newspapers (Gulf News, or 7 Days) for info. Some of the women who found shelter there did have comlpaints though Sad : http://www.gulfnews.com/Nation/Society/10195993.html Refuge shelter boss...

Unfortunately it is a big problem, but when you have the Chief of Police who openly admits to and condones wife beating (as per and article printed last year), then what are you to do about it. There was a women's refuge, but it seems to have suffered some issues, so not sure if it is still operati...

In order to be fair, here is another slant on the story. the shelter was (is?) called City of Hope: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/23/world/middleeast/23dubai.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&pagewanted=all Voice for Abused Women Upsets Dubai Patriarchy By ROBERT F. WORTH Published: March 23, 20...

I think it is great that you got involved, but just be careful if the guy looks like he could really snap. If the woman comes to your house and he follows, he might try to harm all of you. It is so hard when you want to help someone but might also be putting yourself at risk. That's why I admire wh...

Mugabe is a complete wacko. This kind of accumulation of wealth is common in so many countries with corrupt leaders. I saw a news clip about the high ranking officials in Myanmar who splash out on huge jewel necklaces etc to give as wedding gifts in their circle. Very extravagant weddings, when the ...

Technically you can wear what you want, but if you want to be respectful of the local culture, you will try to cover more than what you might wear on a summer vacation in other parts of the world. Personally, if I felt like wearing a tank top I'd bring a pashmina along, and would wear pants. If I fe...

This kind of thing happens in other parts of the world, but it is families selling off their girls for marriage to old perverts, just to have one less mouth to feed. Those young girls become pregnant, but it is "okay" because she is married. Total hypocrisy. In some cultures it is the norm...

I knew of a couple of Jewish ladies living in Dubai, obviously staying in the country with non-Israeli passports. I'm sure all the Jewish people in Dubai keep a pretty low profile. Even though it is discriminatory, I think she isn't missing much by not playing in the UAE. There are other tournaments...

speedhump, you make excellent points. I don't think parents need university education to be able to teach kids from birth onwards how to evaluate what is right from what is wrong, how to think logically, and how to be aware of consequences to actions. Too many parents are busy working, doing leisure...

Well, in the UAE there are many children who are pretty much raised by helpers/maids/nannies - so the parents don't apologize for "bad" behaviour because they don't really know their kids well. They think their kids are perfect :)

From my experience they were the same price everywhere. Sometimes there was a promotional deal that the lens company initiated. For example, Acuvue Moist Dailies - buy x number of boxes, get one box free. I am not aware of any online sites for buying lenses, but I know that can be cheaper in other c...

Not all expats. It isn't in the culture for some to rely on helpers as substitute parents - they merely help lighten the load and focus on domestic tasks like cooking and cleaning.

I said that many kids in the UAE are being raised by helpers/maids/nannies. I did not say Emirati children exclusively. Some countries in the world have a culture of hired domestic help that even expats take up when living there because they can afford it. I meant to include those people as well. Ac...

Sorry to hear about your friend's kid. I hope he's staying out of trouble now! i have always believed in not mixing politics and sports. but lets be honest the whiteys have their own standards. they will and can do anything they want. if someone else does the same to them they get cheesed off. example. http://article.wn.com/view/2009/01/20/Australia_not_keen_to_play_in_Pakist...
