The first thing you'll need is a dynamic dns account. These can be gotten for free through sites such as dyndns, no-ip, and others. You'll need to use port forwarding on your router and select some unused and unblocked port. Etisalat blocks port 80 by default so you can't use that. I chose 8000. I r...

There is a small but growing software industry in Dubai. It's pretty immature and there's very little good talent but it's there. As for copyright infringement, it's rampant. You won't see much of it in the larger companies that can afford licenses but for a large percentage of small businesses (the...

@ahamed Is it? I wasn't able to get it working until I switched ports. I don't know the intricacies of IP/networking enough to know this for sure but my guess was that accessing by, for example, dyndns counts as "access by its ip address directly" since all it does is redirect to your ip a...

While there aren't any comics or gaming stores in Dubai, we do have Kinokuniya, the largest freakin bookstore I've ever seen. It's in the new Dubai Mall and it has the largest comic book collection in all of Dubai. I'm way out of the loop when it comes to comics nowadays so I don't know much about w...

As for gaming stores, I'm pretty sure I saw at least one in Emirates Mall. It was on the ground floor. By gaming store, I meant more like Warhammer, D&D, and tabletop gaming. We have plenty of computer and video games available here but despite my nickname, I'm no longer much of a (video) gamer.

It's taken verbatim (as of this moment) from Wikipedia's article on the UNSC veto power. From that same page: "Although not couched in the same language, various high-level reports make explicit reference to the 'Uniting for Peace' resolution as providing the necessary mechanism for the UNGA to...

i have a dynamic dns host pointing to one of our servers behind a business1 connection. It can be browsed from locations abroad and within UAE. Dynamic dns creates a PTR record / A Record for the ip address, you update to their dns servers. It is different than redirection. I believe you are talkin...

I got a Netgear something or other. I don't remember the precise model number. They're all pretty crappy at this price range but the nice thing about this Netgear is that it came with a built-in dyndns updater. That saved me from having to set up the client but that's a small factor to consider. I'm...

Having dealt with the EEC government, I can assure you its all political and there is very little real work done. Everyone is trying to climb one rung higher on the political ladder at the expense of someone else. I consider that to be a blessing in disguise. It seems that the more "work"...

I assume you're talking about SLRs. Both Canon and Nikon make great cameras. You won't go wrong picking from either of them. One of the best photography groups to join is Flickr. Unfortunately, it's blocked for Etisalat users but if you're with Du, then join it. Otherwise, you can join any number of...

I don't know much about Canon since I'm a Nikon user myself. All I know is that my Canon buddies are perfectly happy with their cameras. With that being said, if you're just starting out, I suggest you get the cheaper option and instead spend any extra money on other accessories. Regarding photograp...

If you're at all interested in Nikons, go to Grand Store in Dubai Festival City. Ask for Mike. If you want to see all the different brands of cameras, go to Dubai Mall. No other mall has Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, and Pentax in such close proximity to one another. I echo quatro's recommendation to...

That's a really broad question. For editing code, I use Notepad++ on Windows and gedit on Linux. For graphics work, I use GIMP. I use the Adobe Flex SDK for some Flash/Actionscript work (not really my forte). As for Firefox plugins, I use Firebug and Noscript. My entire development stack is composed...

Sometimes, harsh is good. Not just for S&M fetishists but also for those who continually dive headlong into obviously bad relationships. I'm not talking about relationships that go sour; I'm referring to those that look bad from the get-go. Case in point: a certain lady friend of mine was involv...

The OP's questions are loaded. It's not correct to ask believers to prove the existence of their god(s) since they rely on faith-- belief even in the absence of proof. Conversely, it's not up to non-believers to prove the non-existence of deities that the believers believe in. The burden of proof is...

Hardly a wannabe rugby. For one thing, there's a lot more strategy involved. This ends up making it a bit slower-paced than rugby. I've played and watched both and while they're both enjoyable to play, football is a lot more spectator-friendly than rugby is.

I Am Not A Lawyer so do not take this post as fact. i. You most certainly do need a license to be able to sell products in the UAE as a business. If you do not start a business, then you (rather than the business) will be personally liable for things you sell. This may not make a huge difference for...

Personally, I found Syriana boring but that's just my opinion. I much preferred Iron Man's simplistic take on the defense industry. As for determining which weapons system is "best", it has historically been virtually impossible to proclaim a winner until they literally fight it out. Even ...

Hey Speedhump, That sounds like a really poor salesman. Yes, of course some effects can be achieved digitally in post-processing but some are difficult or impossible and all of them require learning another, albeit useful, set of skills. Here are a couple of filter effects that can be moderately dif...

Yes, I agree that people tend to frown upon atheists. I consider myself an agnostic though religion interests me. At least I have some leeway in that I can just say, "I don't know," whenever people ask me about the existence of a supreme being. Atheists get the ass end of the horse when it...

Atheists get the a#s end of the horse when it comes to religious discussions because all the other faiths get to share one punching bag. boo hoo  True, it's not a big deal for most atheists considering they would most likely prefer not having anything to do with religions at all. That happens...

That happens both directions  How so? Some atheist look down on theists, theists on atheists, agnostics on theist or atheists, etc... It just doesn't happen with beliefs about religion either. Right, but my point was that atheists end up being the focal point *of the faithful in general* b...

My advice is to talk to your company first and try and negotiate the 20% of your salary back. Assuming you have already tried that, I suggest you go ahead and file your grievance with the MoL. They should be able to tell you whether or not this is legal. You could also hire a lawyer if their rates a...

What you mean is 'people hate a success story'. Not just Dubai. Vindictive, small minded, basically jealous people love to see anyone else who does well brought low. The press and other media know that, and so they dig up anything they can use to feed that mean streak in the public, as it SELLS. Wh...

Hey, I'm not saying that Dubai isn't financially successful. It's just not *as* successful at the moment. Yes, partially because of the global economic frak up but also because of its own doing. You can't contest the fact that over-borrowing and blood-sucking real estate flippers (two of the biggest...
