Re: Dubai IT jobs - advice needed please

Hi, I need your help so I can find out if it's viable for me to work in Dubai. My role in IT is Microsoft Systems Administrator (MCSA Server 2003). My concerns are twofold: 1) Can I find work in Dubai or is the IT market dominated by workers from India? Yes 2) If I can find work, are the pay rates ...

i hate to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but "summer jobs" are not permitted or even recognised in dubai - irrispective of nationality. Only fixed term contracts are, these are normally 3 years of duration. No company will hire anyone for a period shorter than this - the processing and a...

i'd get them to define "house" or if you mean housing allowance, get it cleared up first off before you evaluate your offer further. if for example, you are from the uk, your current standard of housing is likely to cost you between 6 and 8k per month (minimum) and that would be for an apa...

to be quiet blunt most of the "job agents" in dubai are a waste of time, as are using many of the web-sites that offer "gaurenteed placement" in the uae. all basically want to take a service fee from you for processing your papers. legally, uae employers are obliged to pay all re...

With regards to the restraint of trade/ non-competition clauses. Firstly my experience is with companies outside of the Free Zones’ so I can’t comment on it at this stage; if someone perhaps has a copy of a Labour Contract from a FZ company and wanted to share it …. With regards to Labour Department...

Short answer, it's possible, but only just. Depending on the time of year when you were planning on doing it - holidays/ weekends etc. I’d say 4 to 5 weeks is more likely. Your passport is only lodged with the immigration department for a day or two (along with those of your family) while the visa’s...

They normally run the generators 24/7 as part of the "de-watering" process, in most instances the ground water levels are very high (higher than the foundation levels). They have to run the pumps to keep the foundations free of water until they have hardened sufficiently. Alternatively the...

For starters do some research into what construction companies are in the UAE. Look at http://www.yellowpages.ae, type in "construction" - there are several hundred! Obviously some are large and some small. Run through the web links where they appear, this may be tedious, but will give goo...

unfortunatley there is not much in the way of effective legal action you can take against them - it sucks, but that's it. if they were a labour broker, then it's a different storey and legal action/ official complaints can be made regarding thier actions and thier trade license could be revoked. hyp...

look for you to be able to open a case/ lay a charge you have to be in the uae, which you are not. the uae consulate in dubai isn't interested in things like this, i wouldn't expect them to take action. as long as you were never issued a residency visa or labour card they can't do anything. you were...

I’d like to make another point as well, which a lot of people seem to overlook when evaluating an offer. Say for example you were to find accommodation that is just within the budget you've allowed (84,000) - and you manage to put away a little every month - great. One year down the line and the ren...

I ran a little exercise based on the numbers you provided

Year 1 rental: 84,000 (rental as a % of your package = 28%)
Year 2 rental: 92,400 (rental as a % of your package = 30.8%)
Year 3 rental: 101,640 (rental as a % of your package = 33.8%)

Assuming no increase in basic package

It does not state in the labour law anything to do with passports what-so-ever... in fact the word passport is not even mentioned in the entire labour law. However, on a number of occasions various ministers have categorically stated that employers holding passports is illegal. If you read the insid...

Howdy Sage, I should also like to point out that under the previous labour category ban, someone with a position title "manager" could not be banned (subject to other conditions), while a "technician" could be... Interestingly enough the law governing this is still in the federal...

The real catch is that all pets must come into Dubai as Cargo, not excess baggage. Bit of a pain. Personally I’d try and push for the manager tag, about 2 to 3 years ago the regulation was enforced in Dubai, and the only way you could get a transfer of visa (without a ban) was based on job categories and labour position; managers were exempt of the ban. As I said this was possibly 3 years back, ...

I forgot to add, when it comes to paying the visa costs (employer’s expense), it's cheaper to register someone on a supervisory/ administrative level than it is to register them as a manager. This may be the issue; although I think that if your company were penny-pinching over something as small as ...

The easiest way to sort out the ban lifting fee is to go to the labour department yourself and ask one of the legal consultants there, that way you will be getting the correct and up-to-date information. As far as I know the ban exemption fee is not an illegal/ under-the-table process, it is a legit...
