m'fraid the whole country club scene is very "colonial" g&t's, tennis (when it's not to hot) or maybe even the polo club.... you'll either end up an alcoholic, broke, divorced ... or all of the above :) there are more than one clubs here as well, lots of hotels and resorts have their own clubs.....

life is like a box of chocolates

realisation has just struck home...

we should be compiling a book from this site and making some money out of it --- "collective essays from the land of the midday sun" or something like that..

we could have millions in royalties stashed away by the time they release us from jail!!!!!!

working hours

Under UAE labour law a "working week" is defined as 48 hours, how this is achieved depends on your contract and sponsor. Some companies have a two day weekend, others only one day off. If you work in the retail, security or entertainment industry in the UAE the working week is 54 hours, after which ...

lie of the land :)

I'd agree, if you work at Internet City look at "The Greens" its just across the road. When you get here or first arrive stay in a hotel or furnished appartment for the first 2 weeks - this may be a little pricy, but will save you a bundle ultimatley. Have a look at the prices of places/ appartments...

passports

chocoholic is right
you are the "bearer" of your passort which is in fact a government document belonging to your country of residency. no one may hold or retain it without a legal reason.
this applies to sponsors in the uae as well :)

passport control

they are not allowed to hold your passport. they can make a copy of it and keep the copy for thier records. the only reason a hotel may want to keep a guests pasport is if they feel the bill may not be settled; although they will normally ask for a credit card to swipe as insurance. if they want to ...

still hot, but much better by comparison to august! about what it was like in may/ june. sometimes it cools down gradually after mid-summer, and sometimes very quickly within the space of 2 or 3 weeks it has dropped by about 15 degrees (C).
