both the abu dhabi and dubai links i have posted says that if your a visitor and have an international driving permit and original drivers license you can drive friend/relatives and rental car. maybe the insurance folks dont know this or maybe some insurance companies dont want ppl without a UAE lic...

many of the imported (both USA and Japan) cars i have seen here have been in some sort of accident or another. jack the car up and you can sometimes even see poorly welded joints.

if i was buying a used car it would be GCC spec with low kms and full service history.

SALIK WORKS THRU MY V-KOOL!!!!!!!!!! yes it worked thru my front windsheild tint when i went thru all 4 toll gates. i did not stick the tag permanently on the windsheild, i used scotch tape instead. worked just fine.
best part is i wont have an ugly orange sticker permanently fixed on my car

you can rent cars on visit visa as long as you got intl driving permit.
as for renting cars after getting a UAE license, some rental companies require you to have the uae license for 1 year!!!. yes its stupid i know

id go with abu dhabi, have to attend less classes and take less in car practise compared to dubai. i know atleast 2 ppl who got the license in the first try in AD. dubai its 40 classes i think!! how long does it normally take after the medical test to get the residency visa stamped on the passport? 1-2 days or more?

got a relative who's visit visa is expiring the same day as the date of medical test. should he extend his visit visa?

had a 1992 jeep cherokee in the US used by the family which did over 300,000 miles!!! engine and gearbox was built like a brick. the ac did give a few minor problems.

dont go over 30% on the side windows. the front windsheild should have no tint or clear tint only.
