Look at a map of Dubai to see where Jumeirah 1, 2, 3 are relative to Burj Dubai. Travel time could be 5-10 mins if no traffic but allow at least 20-30 min during rush hour jams. Al Safa and Al Wasl roads can be very slow in the evenings. Defense roundabout is under construction and gets badly snarle...

I thought metro was ahead of schedule (one of the few things in Dubai that is)?

Good point about bringing maps with taxis.

If you're from one of the 33 free visa on arrival countries, you'd be fine in Dubai, and should be for Sharjah but I don't know for sure. Sharjah can be different, to say the least. Or just drive to Hatta and back and get a visa renewal there.

My understanding is that the husband or father sponsorship is for residency not employment. The company she works for doesn't have to provide residence visa but is supposed to apply for a work permit / labour card. Here's something from the Gulf News October 2007: An expatriate woman who is sponsore...

If you're not going to be working for a year, and you have UK nationality, then you could come on a visit visa and renew it every 2 months (it's not necessarily legal but it is possible, and relatively common). If you're children are South African then it gets more complicated since I don't think th...

The Sharjah Dhaid road (Sharjah Airport Road), is the most common route and relatively boring until you get to Masafi, then it's sort of scenic through the mountains. More interesting is to turn left at Masafi, head up to Dibba and then down the coast to Fujairah but that will add at least an hour t...

Re: This question to all Westerners

people in Western countries are fairly educated and well travel, so they surely understand what is happening? Don’t they? Was that your original question (or two or three)? I'd say no they aren't, and no they don't, in general. Dubai probably has a greater proportion of well-educated, well-travelle...

It might be worth phoning one or two schools to see if they're flexible about the residence visa requirement - say you're looking to set up but it may take a while.

But how are you going to get residency without being employed by a company? You can get visas through the media city freezone, but only for specific areas of work. I was thinking of a freezone but my suggestion was to enable OP to get into country, get kids into school, and then figure it out. Not ...

If these rumours are true, you can pretty much guarantee an announcement tomorrow, as it would be a convenient time. You're talking about the ruler's brother Sheikh Hamdan? Rumour started 2 weeks ago that the Sheikh is dead. Shot by a relative. Sheikh M was at a wedding this week - looking alive.

Yes, I know that road - quite scenic also. I'd prefer the Kalba option though, mostly because it's much quieter than the Sharjah - Dhaid Road.

I don't know if you can get a visa extended at the Airport - maybe the e-gate office (24 hours) can help but don't count on it. Try the Immigration Department near the trade center roundabout today - they're open until 8pm I think. Sometimes they're open on Eid holidays but shorter hours, try someth...

They will never learn until their child is injured or killed. Exactly, or they're killed themselves. So then just make seatbelts compulsory only for people who choose to wear one.
