Dubai College isn't a GEMS school, they're independent. Not sure if you were saying it was? Jumeirah College is, The English College isn't (I think). Agree with your comments about them. There's also Dubai English Speaking College starting A-level classes this year. Good place.

I was surprised at this opinion - considering the Khaleej Times is a UAE newspaper. Sounded quite level-headed to me.

There's no such thing as absolute freedom of speech anywhere since almost anyone can find a way to feel insulted about something. Therefore countries draw up rules about what is considered inflammatory / slanderous / libellous. The logical way to deal with restrictions you don't like is to either ch...

My understanding is that a company can dismiss you without notice during probation period, but it's a grey area whether or not you can leave without notice (without problems). I have a feeling that technically you have made a commitment which you'd be breaking but in reality, no (or almost no) compa...

Yes, it's a common trap. Newspaper reports often say one or two months instead of 30 or 60 days which doesn't help.

It's Bahraini nationals (with a Bahrain D/L) that can do the easy exchange. Even so, it might be worth trying although since the RTA took over D/L regulation they've become more strict so be prepared to be bounced.

Sorry, I didn't see the Abu Dhabi bit. The RTA is only for Dubai so you'd have to go to Abu Dhabi traffic police, unless you get a Dubai residence visa.

The only safe thing to do is assume 30 day validity at the moment. Even if you get told it's 60 days on entry, what will you do if you get a fine on exit?

There was a report (maybe in Xpress?) in recent months that the Dubai Municipality would be making more effort to chase after housing fees but the DM official that the reporter spoke to said that they wouldn't be backdated.

Zighy Beach (other side of peninsula) has a posh resort, and there's the Khasab Hotel and Qada Tourist Hotel in Khasab. No idea what they're like though.

Bank account might get frozen, more likely if you have an outstanding loan. Joint accounts also. Spouses account if s/he not on company sponsorship (or yours via company) shouldn't. Other bank accounts probably not, especially if you didn't tell your primary bank or company about them.

If you're British you should be able to do visit visa renewal no problem. The 1 month stay out of the country is for nationalities that don't get a visa on arrival but if you want the official party line, you should contact the DNRD.

RTA took over driving license issuing from Dubai Police in 2005, and they became more strict and/or introduced new regulations.

The bank acts when your sponsor informs them that you're out of a job, which is usually before your last paycheck. They might freeze your account if you have outstanding credit card balances. Probably depends on the bank, you, the sponsor, and how far your front teeth stick out ;).

Re: Please help me choose a car (prob 4wd) under 20,000 AED-

Just moved to Dubai and want to buy a car. I'd like to get one for between 12,000 - 20,000 AED. For that price range, anything 4WD is going to be expensive in maintenance (American), or not a proper 4wd (Kia, Suzuki, etc). Either get a loan and spend 40,000+ on an older Pajero (more reliable) or a ...

Re: Another article bashing Dubai....

I can only imagine that Dubai will one day be seen as a punctuation mark on the architectural follies of the past half century. This off-the-shelf city state has been built on laundering the profits of oil, drugs, arms and western aid. Mohammed Al-Maktoum's failing has been his belief that megaloma...

Mine started with: Loss-of-face is a big thing among the Arabs. Therefore Abu Dhabi will not allow Dubai to be consumed by dunes with wild animals inhabiting its buildings, as per Simon's wishes. There are practical reasons too. Like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are both part of the same country, not differ...

Strange, you didn't need a prescription to buy the pill from a pharmacy anyway. So what was the change? That a prescription is required, or that husband has to give permission if getting contraceptive on prescription (so without a prescription, husband permission is not required)?
