I saw them taking off from global village this morning. The sight of, what was it DK... 30 balloons, sorry I lost count, skimming across the rooftops at arabian ranches was something that you don't see every day. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy. On the price, 1000Dhs is a lot more than what you'd pa...

Christmas Shopping

Am I the only one, or does anyone else in Dubai feel that the shopping here seems to be hand me downs from the rest of the world. What I mean is things that have become old stock and are on sale elswhere in the world, are flogged off as top of the range and new release in Dubai. If they can't sell i...

It is the dance that the native Australians (Aboriginals) do at their coroborees.

It is very sacred and cannot be filmed. Anyone filming it would be cursed for life.

You should be able to read your code off the odometer, which from what I can see, is about all that this device does anyway. Is is cheap though, and ships worldwide, so why not just get one sent by post. Even if it is available locally, it won't be cheaper. A better diagnostic tool would be one that...

Should customs tax be charged for personal gifts that are sent through the post.
eg birthday/christmas/easter gifts.

The arabs at the post office seem to get great pleasure out of asking if it is a christmas gift and then charging import tax.

Bleakus, Yes, I beleive that UAE Nationals work behind the customs desk at the post office and collect the money. It is their decision on whether to charge import tax or not. If there were indians working for customs, then I would not be as surprised if they charged the import tax on everything... b...

5% of the value or a minimum of 15 dirhams is charged. 15 dirhams tax equates to an item value of 300 dirhams. But anything of less value than this is charged 15 dirhams and is effectively being charged more than 5%. eg: I was charged 15 dirhams tax for some chocolate easter eggs that I can purchase...

Hmm five percent I must look up UK again. If it is nearly same ther eis no point to move to Dubai Why is this a big decision if you decide to move to Dubai or not? Seems odd to me. He's obviously looking at importing something to sell. I don't know what the sales tax is in england, but subtract tha...

Re: Is there something I should know about Al Barsha?

I went for a walk yesterday from my house in the Lakes to Mall of the Emirates and had a very strange experience. In total on the way there and back, 3 cars stopped to “offer me a lift” home. I’ve heard about the generosity of the locals but they seemed a mix of nationalities (I wasn’t hanging arou...

This is the first time that I have heard of the police pulling ANYBODY over, so i am pleasantly surprised. And no, it is not coz you are white. If anything, this would have helped your case. If you argued with them, you are very lucky to get off with a warning. As an infidel in Dubai, the golden rul...

You will have to be more specific.

"Don't argue with the police"
"You have no rights" (they don't read them to you anyway)
Do you Understand/Agree/Disagree?

etc etc

I with Faz. Australia is the place to buy camels. Paddy McHugh can sell you one and have it sent anywhere in the world. But if you really want a camel from Dubai, I am sure that it can be arranged. Just wire transfer 500,000 Dirhams to my account and I can have one ready for you when you get here.

The fact the the video was shown speaks volumes for the problem that the arab world faces. Everyone, including Sadam, is equal in death. I'll have a go. Although largely correct, rudboy's opinion is sadly one sided. He obviously hates American's and white people in general. 15 years ago a group of men in Beijing, China confronted a Tank, on Live TV waving banners demanding democracy. Actually i have not missed the point, as UAE75 pointed, you clearly used democracy as a reason as to why they went to Iraq. No, I clearly stated that America went into Iraq for control of the Oil, rather than WMD as they claimed. I did not say that they went into Iraq for the sole purpose of establ...

The canadian buisness council is very active here. Keep an eye out for them. I have found that a lot of the Canadians here fled Lebanon and Iran back in the 70's when the shit hit the fan, and have now returned home so to speak... or as close as they would like. They have very interesting stories.
