Garry; Professional employment agencies take their commission (usually once months' salary) from the employer, if the candidate works out (ie. after 3 months employment). UAE Staffing wants 80$ from you (and also wants 15% of a salary from an employer). Doesn't sound very professional. QUICK QUIZ 1....

Angels & Demons, Da Vinci Code ... also Deception Point and Digital Fortress are all quite interesting reads, but; a) by the time you get to the third one you realise that the basic storyline is all the same b) you also realise that the books 'feel' like an adapted version of a screenplay. Its a...

A few years ago I remember reading in a Turkish magazine article the results of a survey. One of the questions asked (of rural womenfolk) was what they expected from a marriage. The comments included this response; "He doesn't beat me more than once a week" - 7% There is this strange psyche in a sec...

Sean;

As with all international telephone calls, when you are dialling a local 'exchange' leave off the first zero.

So the number you need to dial from Germany is;

PS. Be very careful about picking up jobs over the phone. YHBW

Liban; Dubai Investment Park is an huge area down near Jebel Ali, about 8-10km inland. Head down SZR to the 6th and hang a left. After the second dead camel turn right. Traffic is always a factor in Dubai :) If you're coming from the Green Community then it would take about 35-45 minutes to get to I...

While completely illegal, Dubai is a mini-metropolis and all activities take place. But I wouldn't sit down in a park and toke up if I were you. There's very little fun harassment. But my fiancee visited a few months ago and when she went to the shops she was wearing a strap-top, and one guy crashed...

Are you TEFL or IESL qualified and do you have much international experience? If you do then just look for the standard things. I don't know anything about the TEFL situation here in Dubai. Most places (outside of America) don't care toooo much about the actual format of your CV, but they do care ab...

Can't help you any more mate, sorry. I just know about the industrial zone in DIP. Can you come up with anything more descriptive than "E Block, Dubai" ? Why not take a GPS next time you go house-hunting? And WHY look at places so far away? Satwa, Bur Dubai, Karama, Mirdiff would all be much closer ...

Please explain: What is the difference between the stamps?Robert If you look at your passport carefully you'll see TWO stamps. One is for 'in' and the other is for '60 days'. If you have a residencey permit they shouldn't give you the 'valid only for 60 days' stamp, which is Choco's unfortunate sit...

Emma; I would have thought the best place to apply for help would be the local consulate. They're fairly helpful on these matters and even if they can't resolve the situation themselves they can normally point you in the right direction if you ask nicely. We don't know what nationality you/your sist...

Just adding to Liban's post; 4) Stay with them for the first week. Understand Dubai a little, then move. You'll also have a chance to buy the Gulf Times, Connector, Time Out and maybe visit a couple of bars to decide which one'll be your 'local'. 3) So there's slightly less hurry - and there's more ...

Liban; With a little hunting / waiting you should be able to find a 1B at the Greens for 60k. You could always get a 4M (two-bed villa) in The Springs for 65. Greens is a little more 'happening' - JA is good for families. Or consider Bur Dubai area for your first year in town? There are also some qu...

What about Mirdiff? Mirdiff is great if you like plane-spotting. It is also fairly central and you should be able to find somewhere reasonable for 60-75k. The sports facilities at the Aviation Club are also some of the best in town (and reasonably priced compared with Emaar's offerings) Especially ...

Mirdiff is popular amongst the deaf and hearing-impaired. Some people hate the airplanes, some people don't seem to notice. Just depends - s'pose you can get used to it. Watch out for the ones that miss the runway :D Ok, so nowhere in Dubai has a rich and historical past (with the possible exception...

For purchasing options you're absolutely right, however if the guy would consider renting (and he said he would) then there are far more options.

You don't _need_ a residency permit to get an E-card. If they like your passport at the airport - and/or you convince them you travel enough to 'justify' an E-card early then they'll sort you out with one. Takes 10 minutes. 150 Dirhams / 2 years. Travelling once a month saves 2 (both ways) x 24 x 10...

Do you know how to get a season ticket for the golf carts that ferry you under the runways?

They always seem to charge me too much when I flag them down. Mebbe they're a branch of Dubai Taxi?
