Accommodation - New job at du in Dubai Media City

Hey guys, Aussie female just about to relocate to Dubai (in approx. 10 days). I will be put up in a hotel for the first month, but will need to find myself a place of my own in the meantime. I recognise that I'll need to pay 80 k - 90 k Dhs per year (more than double what the same costs in Sydney), ...

Thanks, Maad. I think 900 square feet will do me fine. I'll start looking at the Greens as soon as I arrive (in the next 10 days or so). Another quick question, if it doesn't impose too much... :) Are the rental adverts price aggressive, conservative, or quite realistic? i.e. Is there any room to ne...

Hi there, I empathise with your concerns, and in fact share a few of them. I am 28, Female and Aussie... and I'll be arriving in Dubai to start my new job in the next week or two. I have been reassured to the point of comfort about the safety in Dubai, and on the whole have found most "local&qu...

Thanks, groover. I enjoy things much more when I feel I have received a good deal, so I will be sure to negotiate hard. As for the username, it's a long-standing nick-name derived from unfortunate initials. They used to create stickers at my old jobs and place it on my chair, have coffee mugs design...

Ian,

First I find you're a fellow Aussie, then I find out you're a fellow Aussie/Irish dual citizen. That's a lot in common - I will definitely be chasing you down for a couple of drinks.

I'm Irish/Aussie. Irish people are famous world-wide for being friendly, creative and great drinkers. I quite like them myself, with a few horrid relatives as the exception. As for Dublin, it's very cool... but you'd miss out if you didn't go west and check out the rural, more traditional Ireland. :...

Fitness First in Dubai

Guys, I am a Fitness First member here, and they have offered to give me a 100 visits pass for Fitness First in Dubai. My alternative is to cancel my contract early, pay out approx. $200 and then join a new contract in Dubai. What do you all think? My membership here costs approx. Aus $80 per month....

Other languages?

Guys,

I'm curious about what languages everybody in here speaks, other than English?

I speak Portuguese (Brazilian), and various other bits and pieces.

Existem outros por aqui que querem conversar na minha lingua preferida?

Thanks,

Honestly, you lot... The amount of help you're providing to nervous creatures like me is amazing. Thanks to each and every one of you. Another question - I love my Weber BBQ; do most big 1 bedders in the Greens/Marina/Springs/Meadows/Al Barshaa etc have a balcony big enough for a small outdoor table...

Guys, What is an average day in the life of an expat living in Dubai? Is the average commute 30 minutes, 60 minutes...? Is the average day 8 hours with 30 minute lunch, 9 hours, 10 hours...? Is work generally fast-paced and forever hectic, or is there a reasonable pace? Are weekends long enough, and...

Thanks for the reply... and I'm sorry to hear about all the problems you've been having out at Satwa. I'd be too sad to miss out on my BBQ, so I'll be direct and state that I will not accept a no balcony/no BBQ policy for my new home. BBQ'ing is in my veins - It's a core part of the Aussie culture! ...

Kempinski Hotel - Mall of the Emirates

Guys,

What are your thoughts on this hotel? I believe work will be putting me up here for a month until I find my own place, and I am curious about the impressions you have of it.

Thx,

Subaru

Guys,

Are Subarus popular in Dubai? I haven't seen too many adverts for them.

How much do you think a 2nd hand 2 or 3 year-old car would go for?

Thx,

That's some awesome advice... I'll keep my hopes up, then! As for the "shrimp on the bar-b", I'd prefer prawns any day. If any of you hear of good, big 1 bedders in the usual expat haunts, please point me in the right direction. (Or tie the landlord up and make him/her promise to give me a...

What a shame... I will have to consider a different car altogether!

I like the chunky, uglier looking models... eg. outback, or forrester. Are there similar other makes out there that I should look at?

Thanks as always,

Wanted - 2 bedroom villa plus study in the Springs

Hi,

Please contact me if you have something along these lines. I would like to start occupancy in a couple of weeks. I have a preference for a larger villa, and although I like the Springs, would consider other areas.

Thanks,

Oops - rental, please. I saw something in the Springs today and wasn't overwhelmed. I wish I could combine the quality of the new Greens buildings eg. Arno with the villa size and layout of the Springs. Not sure which other areas I should look at, but I didn't like the Marina. I like a good size, an...

Changed my mind - now I would like to live in Jumeirah / Umm

Anybody know of any small villas in the above areas?
Nothing much is advertised, so I thought word-of-mouth might be te better way.

After looking arounf everywhere, I really do prefer these areas vs. the Springs/Greens/Meadows/Marina.

Thanks!

The building is great, with pool, gym etc. In the Greens where you'd be surrounded by expats (they all seem to be living here, in the Springs and Dubai Marina). I c...
