AUD

Anyone else have anything to say -- good or bad -- about the American University in Dubai (AUD)?

AUD vs. AUS

How might one compare the American University in Dubai (AUD) with the American University of Sharjah (AUS)?

My understanding is that there is no connection between AUD and AUS. They just have somewhat similar names.

Is one better than the other? And, if so, then how?

Any other thoughts?

Places to study Arabic in Dubai

Can anyone suggest a good place to study Arabic in Dubai?

I'd be looking for a very basic (intro) course.

Aussie school

I heard that an Aussie school in the UAE recently had some sort of dispute with the government and was closing down.

It might have been the University of South Queensland, but I'm not sure.

Anybody know about that?

UNB

I think the University of New Brunswick has programs in China, Bermuda, and maybe India. They are also apparently looking at Southeast Asia. However, I don't know of any UNB programs in the Middle East.

Gum in SG

If somebody needs chewing gum in Singapore, it is easy enough to pop over the causeway and to buy some in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Apparently, doctors in Singapore can also perscribe chewing gum (for bad breath???). That was a compromise to enable the US-Singapore free trade agreement!

KV

Looked at the website for KV the other day.

They still listed the University of Southern Queensland, which I heard has left Dubai.

Another global ranking of unis

Another global ranking of universities was done last year by The Times (London) Higher Education Supplement. To see the full list, you would probably have to register. However, you can see the top 20 from that list on another site: http://newshub.nus.edu.sg/headlines/0411/ranking_05nov04.htm No scho...

Electricity

Here’s a very basic question. What sort of electrical outlets/plugs are used in Dubai? Three-prong, UK-style (also found in Malaysia, Singapore, etc.)? Or, is another type of outlet used? My impression is that there are about half a dozen different types of outlets used in different parts of the wor...

You might want to keep a US address for certain purposes while overseas. You could make payments on your credit card bills thru a family member if somebody is willing to do that for you.

Ramadan in Dubai

This tread is interesting. Although I've not yet been in Dubai during Ramadan, I have been in Malaysia during Ramadan. Islam is the state religion in Malaysia although only a slight majority of Malaysians are Muslims. The Malays are Muslims, but most of the other ethnic groups follow other religions...

I've been told that some employers in the UAE have even longer probation periods like nine months or even one year.

German TV

You might be able to get DW-TV (Deutsche-Welle) in the UAE. Certainly, DW-TV can be found in much of Asia with programs in German and English. Also, I think that they have an Arabic service as well.

The Gulf

Certainly, there are other bodies of water with different names. Take, for example, the body of water between Korea and Japan. The Japanese call it the Sea of Japan ("Nihonkai") while the Koreans call it the East Sea ("Donghae"). Even the British and the French, who are both in the EU, can't agree o...

Gulf specs

Looking at many of the car ads here I keep seeing references to "Gulf specs," but I don't know what that means. Although I did try an Internet search, I couldn't find the answer. And, I don't want to ask a car dealer about something that seems so basic to the car market in Dubai. I assume that Gulf ...

Fax film

Here's a very technical question. I'm looking for some place in the UAE that sells film suitable for a SHARP fax machine. I already checked the SHARP website. WC at HRC

For those still looking for a place to watch the World Cup, you can try the Hard Rock Cafe near Dubai Internet City.

There's no special admission or cover charge. You just order some drinks and/or food.

For the match that I saw at HRC, they actually had commentary in English and no commercials.

Car

There is a public bus system of sorts here, but it is not as good as what you might be used to elsewhere. Many companies provide private bus or van services for their workers as a result. For example, a construction company will bus its workers to and from building sites. Are you from China? Compare...

Working in a store

Some people who work in stores here in Dubai get very low pay by Western standards. I've heard of cases of some people (Asian workers) in stores only making around five hundred dirhams (AED 500) per month. How they can live on that in the UAE and also send money back to their home countries I don't ...

If you haven't done so already, look into the medical malpratice insurance situation in the UAE. So, the sala...

Hi guys, I'm looking for notary public services to draw up a document. Does anyone know what the procedure is, and where I can seek notary public services? The religious holidays can be a bit tricky here because they tend to be announced close to the day. Even though the Islamic calendar is a lunar one, the holidays don't always fall when one might expect.
