If they haven't got you the visa, then they can't ban you in anyway. The other thing is, if your residence visa is from free zone, the ban is only limited to that free zone. Yea, hiring a lawyer is the best way forward. If you can't afford one, then my guess is you can't afford to wait years for the payment to come in. Sometimes, as mentioned, the best thing to do is take what you can get and move on.
