Hi! I am 15 weeks pregnant and we will be moving to Dubai in February 2006 from London. I need some enlightment in several topics. I wanted to have some information about hospitals in Dubai, as I will need to have antenatal care and give birth over there. Has anyone had their babies there? How was y...

TV system, electricity, Uum Sequim,2nd-hand cars & hospi

Hi! I have some more queries: 1. What TV system is used in UAE? PAL (European) or NSTC (USA, Japan, South America) Will my UK TV work over there? 2. What kind of electricity? Please, I need more details than the vwlts (no idea!), I mean, is it like in Europe, the US or UK? (I am talking about plugs)...

Thanks Arniegang and Redbullny for your replies, they were very helpful! I do have some more queries regarding the hospitals, although the list was extensive and very useful, I don't really know which hospitals are private and which ones are public (are foreigners entitled to public healthcare once ...

Thanks Audrey, Where did you have your babies? I am just not sure wether foreigners are entitled to public health system after becoming residents. I will have private insurance, but does not cover maternity (especially since I am already pregnant) So I will have to foot the bill at a private hospita...

Thanks Canelli, No idea where anything is just yet, will have to find out soon! I am not an organic maniac mum or nothing like it, it's just that here most of the baby jars (Heinz, Gerber, Cow and Gate, Hipp Organic) are organic and also have a good variety of baby food jars (from pasta, currys, pae...

Dear Kanelli, You are in for a big suprise whne you'll have children, ha,ha! You'll see you have no spare time whatsoever! I do manage to cook for my baby, but it is also convenient to have jars when you go out. Luckily my son used to like both options, before he started his fussy eating phase a few...

Exchanging driving licence/importing art

Hi, 1. Just wanted to know if it's true that if you hold an exchangable driver licence (like the UK) but you are holder of a different nationality from the licence (ie Italian) they might force you to take the driver's test. I was told this by someone who used to live in Abu Dhabi about 2-3 years ag...

Hi! Thanks so much for your extensive replies! They were so helpful. Moomin, Good to know that you are happy withe the antenatal care so far. I think I'll probably go to the American Hospital as well, how far is it from Jumeirah and Umm Sequim (don't have a place just yet, but guess we'll be looking...

Hi Moomin, So you are in Umm Sequiem. Is it nicer than Jumeirah or about the same? My husband will be working in Umm S, so I guess that will be our first option, due to the traffic (it's bad enough that he'll have to work 5.5 days a week, so don't fancy him spending hours in traffic!) How did you fi...

Another question, how baby friendly is Dubai?

I am talking about baby changing facilities, highchairs in restaurants and in general people's attitude to screaming tots!

Audrey, Good to know about baby changing facilities for dads, as my husband is usually on nappy duty when we go out, ha,ha! (and weekends, and evenings, and...as much as he can!) Sorry to hear about your experience in your shared toilet at the hospital! Well, if it makes you feel better, it even hap...

Babies born in the UAE

Hi! Just wanted to know what is the status of a baby born in the UAE? Do they get UAE nationality straight away? I mean, is the UAE nationality by blood or by land? What if I DON'T want it for my babby, can I just give it a miss, do I have to formally renounce to it or is it complusory? Please advis...

Thanks dbxsoul, very thorough reply!

Good to know...no offence, but not really interested in becoming an UAE citizen! Our children are already entitled to about 6 different passports between my husband and me, so that's more than enough!

About this medicalexam, is it only for the main work visa applicant(i.e my husband through his work) or do all the members of the family have to have these tests? No that I have any strange desease or anything, jutst that I am pregnant and can't have an x-ray, so no idea if this could delay the appl...

No, not at all. I am just concerned about what kind of "rights" the state might have on my child. I am just not familiar with arab customs. For instance, in Iran (and by no means I think that the UAE and Iran are similar regarding the application of Islamic law!) children born to an Iranian father, ...

I am Venezuelan/Italian, and my husband is British, but his mother is half German as well (so he could claim this nationality if he wanted...but he'll have to renounce to all his other nationalities, so not very keen about it), his father is Lebanese, but he was born in Jordan, so he also has a Jord...

Hiring a car/driver for a day

Hi! Already in Dubai! Very busy settling in with a toddler and a bump! Wanted to know if someone knows how can I hire a car and a driver for a day. I need to go and check out some nurseries. I know I could take a taxi, but I am afraid it would be tough to get one from a not very crowded street, or i...

The Greens

Hi! I have to start looking for a place to live this week. We first thought about uum sequim, but having looked around we are considerimg other areas, as it looks like there are mostly villas (we would prefer a flat to start with). Someone recommended The Greens and we went to have a look today and ...

Hi, We came to Dubai less than a month ago with a one way ticket. Our resident visas aren't ready yet (they take about 6 weeks, hopefully!) and no one asked about them. In fact, we were the ones to mention it to the check-in staff (in oder to justify our more than obvious excess luggage!) She checke...

Cheap international calls

Hi! Just wanted to know which is the cheapest way to make international calls from Dubai. Is there anything similar? O...

PO Box and Postal Services

Hi, Just got the residence visa, so as I'm now entitled to the luxury of mail, I am looking forward to have a PO Box. How do you do it? Where do you go? Hoe does it work? Secondly, where are the post offices here?I haven't seen any. How safe/efficient/reliable is the Mail here (does it take ages to ...

Thanks to all for your help, although the news are quite bleak! I just don't get it how you don't have any post, I mean, I thought Venezuela's so-called mail was unbeatable in inefficiency, but hey, at least it exists, nobody uses it, but it's there! I just assumed everyone had a PO Box in an office...

Watching Germany 2006 on TV

Is it true that only a suscription channel called ART has the rights for Germany 2006? And that you have to pay about 1000 Dhs to watch the matches? Any idea which cable company offers this channel, Showtime or Orbit?

That sucks!
