Hi,

Yes Montreal is closer to NYC than lots of places in NY [and certainly a nice size city]. Anyway I plan on arriving in Dubai sometime in the middle of Jan 2006.

Happy Holiday and Happy New Year to you and your fiance too.

Don't know yet but I will be in a hotel for a month while looking for a place to live [a one bedroom is all I need]. Any suggestions? In looking at the forums it seems like one can live almast anywhere. I will be working near the entrance to "palm island".

Thanks in advance.

Thanks again,

What sort of rents are average for a 1 bedroom? Without prying too much what do you guys pay (so I can gage). I am not looking for super luxury (safety and tranquility yes) as I will be carrying my NYC place concurrently at least for the first year.

I-Pod Assistance

Hi folks, I am either too old (not too old), computer illeterate (not much), or lazy (not really) but my wife bought me an I-Pod so I can listen to tunes without the need for a cd collection. One problem: my cd's are 6,000 miles away! In any event, any suggestions on best way to load up the thing! T...

Maybe there should be a "pet adoption" section on this forum. That way us members of the forum could help out and "rescue" some of the unfortunate pets.

What's the story with empty/closed swimming pools?

Folks, My building in the marina has a very nice roof top pool but it has been empty for months with no satisfactory answer as to when it will be filled and can be used. The "answer" from "management" has thus far been that they are dealing with the municipality, blah, blah. I understand there was s...

My impression was that there was some citywide "moritorium" on openning the pools pending some "ruling" regarding whether or not all pools need to have lifeguards, or not. I think requiring life guards at each pool regardles of size or location is foolish. I can see a need for a lifeguard at a beach...

arniegang. Thanks for that. You are right on. When I first moved to the 15th floor I noticed water damage in one of the bedrooms. I thought it was strange since I could not imagine there being any bathroom/chicken directly above that spot (pipe risers, etc.). But it makes perfect sense that flooding...

New York, best city in the world.

In coversation the topic of "best city" was discussed. My choice was New York (by a country mile). Someone actually compared Dubai to New York City - Fuggedabout it!

What say you?

Of course I think New York is better than Dubai. I also think it is a better place than Paris, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles (Dubai could be better than that), Amsterdan, Sydney, etc. etc.

I note that constantine's profile picture is one of him standing in Times Square (NYC - if that is him). When I see someone on the forum putting up a profile picture of him or her standing on Sheik Zayed Road then maybe there is a grain of comparison. Till then...

Amazingly, Although NYC has over 9 Million residents (excluding commuters) and its "infamy" for guns and crime, Dubai has a much higher per capita death rate resulting from violent death (5 times higher!). Just comparing (2005 statistics) the number of murders (and don't tell me there are none in Du...

What a load of crap . Talk about creative statistics. A violent death in a car in not the same as being shot for your wallet. No one said it was, the point, not based on "creative statistics", is that you are more than five times likely to die a violent death (regardless of the comparison...

Here is a suggestion, Drive with your headlights on no matter how sunny it is (not the high beams). This serves as safety as drivers ahead of you will see you and think twice (hopefully) about cutting you off. Pedestrians will see you as well. I have been driving with the headlights on for many year...

Great commentary and real concerns. Lets do our part although it is probably unrealistic to do anything about the construction slave labor. But it is within our own control to be respectul and nice to; The nanny/babysitter The maid The Gardner The doorman The Taxidriver (don't forget to tip) The guy...

Word of advice,

Drive Carefully. If you never seen snow = never driven on it! Ain't nothing worse than a new driver on snow (and SUV drivers on snow for that matter). Same for rain (if you are from Dubai where it doesn't really rain).

Best of luck in Canda.

Stopping in Dubai before going to Canada won't help with your driving in fact it will make it worse (thinking that that IS the way anyone should drive).

I've used them through the call service "twice" in one trip (for the First and Last times). It took them 35 minutes to arrive at my building after repeated calls and assurances that the car was "around the corner".

People watch too many movies and believe every one in NYC carries a gun or owns a gun. FYI, anyone carrying a gun witouth a license receives a MANDATORY sentence of one year in prison (more added depending of where and under what circumstances the gun was found). It is next to impossible for a priva...

I was surprised to learn that new york is one of the safest "large" cities in the USA. Even "safety" has become a media hype. If enought people repeat something about a place then it becomes that. Prime example, mention "middle east" to most americans and guess what? An overwhelming majority (90% pe...
